I chose the Salisbury as part of a flight/hotel/transfers package. My choice was influenced most by the price and location--within easy walking distance of Times Square, MoMA, Central Park, LincolnCenter, etc. The hotel is mid-century or earlier and has not seen much renovation, but it is in good repair and very clean. My room was a spacious suite on the back side of the hotel. WiFi is available, but not free. (though Starbucks is around the corner) Heat is steam via radiators, so there is little control of the temperature. I found it to be quiet, simple, and comfortable. I am likely to go there again.

Starving artists revitalized SoHo and TriBeCa, two former industrial centers. Although the factories are long gone, their cast iron and mason buildings remain, now housing art galleries, high-end retail, and some of the city’s best restaurants. Robert De Niro’s TriBeCa Film Festival helped reestablish the area as a cultural zone after the 9/11 attacks. Nearby, Chinatown expands into Little Italy.
