"Nice hotel close to the water and shopping. "
The hotel was sort of retro cool. It was nice to have AC in the room considering most of the island eschews AC. Didn't like the parking situation, but an overall good experience.

"Ok for 1 or 2nights ... "
Promised me a water view ... did not have one available. 51 parking spots for 140 rooms ... people are nice ... apparently the owner of mine does not care how it's advertised .... shower door didn't close ... pocket door they used a dry wall screws to make a stopper ... you get the idea ... but if you need clean (thanks staff) and priced right good for a night or two ....

"Good location, dated and budget hotel."
Rented a hotel at last minute (due to missed flight). Pleasantly surprised with location, but hotel could really do with a modest set of investments -- the bed was very old spring mattress, and the jacuzzi has been "turned into a kiddie pool". (Which is to say there are no jets in it, apparently. I didn't test the temperature but I assume it is not "hot".)

"Great location;cleanliness& upkeep depend on owner"
This is our 2nd time staying at the Castle Kona Reef. The room from our 1st experience 4 years ago was very clean and well maintained with a lovely ocean view even from our garden view room. Our room on this trip was disappointing in regards to cleanliness and poor upkeep/maintenance. The bathroom tub had mold along all the molding and the shower door tracks were corroded, rusting and filled with mold. The sink in the bathroom was not clean and had soap scum on the faucet and grime between the faucet and the wall; including other people's hair trimmings. It was disgusting to say the least and I complained. The staff took down the information and reduced our cleaning fee. The kitchen needed maintenance with a broken handle on the microwave and the dishwasher falling out of the wall every time we loaded it. The bedroom closet doors were broken and would not close properly and would not stay on the tracks. The bedroom appeared clean as did the living room, kitchen and dining area. The view and location however, was amazing! We had a garden view room but nearly all rooms have at least a partial view of the ocean. We loved drinking coffee and eating breakfast on the lanai and ending our day with a beer watching the ocean hit the shore. Overall, I recommend staying here but must caution that the rooms will vary greatly depending on owner and whether the condominium takes care of the cleaning and upkeep or if the owner does. I do not recommend staying in unit B33.

"Average hotel, good location"
Pretty average for a holiday inn. Nothing special, but an okay experience. Room was clean, modern, and comfortable. Walls and doors are a bit thin. Our thermostat wouldn't work, so the front desk had to set the temp for our room and we had no control over it. Breakfast is weak. They have options like eggs, bacon, cereal, yogurt and fruit, but not very tasty. But the location is perfect. Right in the heart of Kona it's walking distance to the main shopping strip and lots of reatsuarants. And make sure you hit up Holy Donuts across the parking lot!

You’re not the average traveler — and we know it

You’ve done your homework and know exactly where you want to go. We’re here to help with some Hotwire travel geek-approved tips on how to save on your booking.

    Get away for the weekend

Hotels in bigger cities usually charge higher rates during the week, when people are traveling for business. Weekends can be a bargain! It’s the other way around for vacation spots, so if you’re looking for a beach escape, consider a mid-week trip.

    Give yourself some wiggle room

If your plans are flexible, play around with some different travel dates – a shift of a few days either way can help you save big. Prices usually jump the weekends before and after popular holidays, so we recommend steering clear of them. Or consider visiting during the off-season, when prices are generally lower.

    Plan around big events

Are prices surprisingly high? There might be a huge conference or festival in town. Consider shifting your dates if you can. Of course, if that’s why you’re going, you’ll have to bite the bullet. We’ll still work to get you the best rates out there.

    Noodle over new adventures

Set aside time to plan what you want to see, taste and discover. Nothing completes a trip, big or small, like a few new experiences! Check city apps or area websites to find out what’s new and what events are happening during your stay. Even during a family reunion, you can detour to that locals-only fish taco stand or under-the-radar music club. Your cousins will be impressed.
