great location, quite, nice rooms, we stayed twice this vacation, the first one for one night, the second one for 6 nigths, next to Retiro Park, Prado Museum, Alcala Gate, and it is walking distance to Gran Via and Sol, but not to close to be noisy, which is perfect!

We were in Madrid for a day. The hotel was beautiful with a great cafeteria on site as well as music on the terrace garden during the evening. We walked to Retino Park which was lovely. There are not many other places to see nearby walking distance. However, the hotel itself was so nice...we had ice cream and sat in the beautifully decorated lobby at night. The airport was a 15min cab ride from the hotel and there is a cab stand infront of the hotel. FYI there is a flat rate to the airporrt of 30 euros.

Madrid is spectacular; food, sangria, and Flamenco!!! No humidity; but hot in August--bring good walking shoes and a hat :),locals are dressier than Americans; we enjoyed wearing our "nicer" summer clothes. Most Spaniards are on holiday in August; so we found shops and restaurants open & less crowded than expected. We ate and walked (!!) our way through this beautiful, clean city with 2 sons (12 &16) who also loved the history, food (Jamon Iberico sandwiches esp) and sites. Many beautiful Cathedrals in every city. In Madrid, we toured the Atletico Soccer stadium, Museo Prado, Palacio, Museo de Sorollo (a must!) and took train-rides to Salamanca, Segovia, and Toledo with its crazy small streets & shops. Half hour car ride with local friends to see El Escorial, which is awesome; you have to eat at their "cafeteria" where you can also stay for a quiet and old fashioned overnight/weekend retreat. The Petit Palace is a wonderful hotel across from Parque de Retiro and within walking distance to restaurants, Museo de Prado, & Ritz. Free bike rental a plus and always fresh cold water and friendly hotel staff to greet us and guide us to local places. Location is a quick cab ride to Rastro Fair (Sundays), Plaza de Mayor, Mercado de San Miguel for a delicious meal, and Hernanz, which is oldest place to buy hand made espadrilles. Local friends advised not to tip the usual 15-20% and instead only 1-2%. It feels weird, but it is customary and we quickly got used to it

Next to the broad, tree-lined Paseo del Prado, the new extension at the world-class Prado museum is an architectural triumph. The well laid-out Botanical Gardens opposite the entrance are worth a wander and behind them lies Madrid’s green sanctuary, the Retiro park. Boat on the lake, stroll through the fragrant rose garden, and watch the terrapins sunbathe by the delicate Palacio de Cristal.
