I have stayed at the Grand America many times and it is the best hotel in SLC. The design and function are exceptional and the views from the east side are excellent. It is an ok location but you have to walk a couple of blocks to get to the main part of downtown. You feel like you are on the edge of the good side of town and the so-so side of town. To the north are shops, fine dining, shopping and entertainment. To the south are tattoo parlors, body shops and pawn shops, but then that is downtown SLC.
The staff at the hotel are friendly but not 5 star. At breakfast we had to ask for coffee twice and when it was served it was lukewarm, picky yes but then a 5 star hotel would have been different.
At the front desk I have never seen the same desk professional twice and I am always asked if this is my first visit. You would think between the hotel and Expedia there would be a way to identify returning guests. That would be five star.

I love how close this hotel is to the Family History Center! The staff are friendly and helpful. The room had a refrigerator and microwave. Even though we were close to the tram, I couldn't really hear it. I slept well.

The price of this hotel includes parking and breakfast. It is hard to beat. It is easy to locate and park. It is about a 20 minute walk to most downtown sites or transportation. Ask reception for a map - it's simple, but good. Also, there is a Starbucks only a block away.
