Why rent a car in Phoenix?
You’ll want and need a car to explore the Valley of the Sun, also known as the greater Phoenix-Scottsdale metropolis. The heart of the Sonoran Desert boasts millions of saguaro cactus, world-class spas and golf resorts, high-minded art galleries and high-culture museums, stylish boutique shopping and a lot of retirees.
Where to go in Phoenix
Downtown Phoenix – with Symphony Hall, the Herberger Theater and stadiums for the Diamondbacks and Phoenix Suns – is walkable and surprisingly mellow. Hop on the METRO Light Rail down Central Ave to midtown for easy access to dining, drinking, the Heard Museum and Phoenix Art Museum. While the fashionable Camelback Corridor is rife with luxe resorts, it also offers superb hiking on Camelback Mountain. Old Town Scottsdale is great for a stroll, while Downtown Scottsdale has galleries galore, the Museum for Contemporary Art and the Scottsdale Center for Performing Arts. Above all, don’t miss a visit to Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin West.
Getting around Phoenix
Although there are more than 1,300 miles of bike lanes here (the light rail takes bikes), drivers rule the roads. It can take 90 minutes during morning and afternoon rush hours to cross the city. Know your exits on the east-west I-10 and the north-south I-17, as quick lane crossings are not for the faint-of-heart. Typical touring includes hopping on and off Loops 101 and 202. Taxis are rarely used.
