We had a thoroughly enjoyable stay in Metropol for three days in August 2016. Its right next to the Kremlin and Bolshoi and ideally positioned for sightseeing of central Moscow. There is a Metro station practically opposite the hotel and plenty of options for food. The staff are formal but friendly, the decor is pretty luxurious. The room we stayed in was large, with tall ceilings, a good view and very comfortable. The grand architecture of the hotel itself and its fascinating history are a nice bonus. Definitely an experience in itself.

The four sides of the 21,000 square-metre Red Square are bordered by colourful St Basil’s Cathedral, the GUM shopping centre, the Kremlin and Lenin’s mausoleum, and the State Historical Museum. Outside the square are rows of souvenir stalls and impersonators posing for pictures. The Kremlin contains the three gold topped cathedrals of cathedral square and the Armory museum.
