We booked a hotel rather than a just an apartment or room as we were expecting a serviced hotel as a treat and paid accordingly. There is no reception, no bar and no catering other than at the neighbouring property, just a 4 digit number supposedly to open the front door and room, it didn’t allow access to the room, which caused some anxiety. Fortunately someone answered the out of hours emergency number and was able to give us another pass code. The room was not serviced, nor were the tea/ coffee replaced. There are notices and instructions setting out some of the limitations at the premises but only after the booking is confirmed. We didn’t have any significant issues with the room or premises which would have been fine given the historic nature of the property. I don’t wish to arrange a long weekend away adding to life’s regular hassle. Needless to say we won’t be returning.

Upon arrival the room was relatively clean and straightened out nicely. Decorated to an OK standard. However, the room itself was absolutely sweltering and could've done with a fan or a portable air conditioning unit. I had to open both the windows wide to let some cool air in.....which unfortunately let the screaming and shouting from outside in too. But hey, I've booked something in the heart of student land so that's sort of on me as well! As far as cleanliness goes....look a little closer you'll see things aren't so great and definitely lacks attention to detail in that are. Not the worst but certainly not the best. It looks like shower gel, handwash and shampoo were provided once upon a time but now all that remain are empty containers. This is such a basic thing so either do it or don't. Kitchenette area was reasonably clean with utensils, plates bowls and a dishwasher provided. Overall, it was OK but could do better. It seems like somebody has lost interest in it!

Breakfast wasn’t great but there were many options

Nice room, although the electrical outlets were inconveniently placed. Good restaurant for dinner and breakfast, and very close to the Welsh National Roman Legion Museum.

We were in a basement room and it wasn’t the cleanest, in the sense that there was dust entrenched and clinging to surfaces, the curtains and carpet had seen better days and there were spots of mould on the bathroom ceiling. However, the bed linen and towels were clean and fresh and the bed was very comfortable. I have to make a comment about the height of the side of the bath for stepping in and out off for the shower - it was very high and could actually be quite dangerous for someone who’s a little unsteady on their feet or a bit older. A simple handrail on the wall on the side you get out would solve this because it is an accident waiting to happen. The staff were not very helpful with the few questions we asked and half the time looked a bit inexperienced and out of their depth. We looked in on the breakfast but decided against it as it wasn’t that cheap and didn’t look very appealing. The best thing about the hotel is its location for Wills Memorial Hall where Bristol University has its graduations - it’s across the road, less than 5 min walk - so the perfect base. I’d stay at the hotel again for this reason alone. The hotel’s location in general is excellent with lots of shops, restaurants and cafes around about and a bus stop 2 min round the corner to go into Clifton Village.

WOW what a fabulous hotel! We had a lovely welcome at reception, our room was bigger than expected for a 'cosy' room. It was lovely and clean and although there was no aircon a substantial fan had been provided. The bed was very comfy. Bathroom was spacious, fluffy towels and toiletries which smelled gorgeous. We had supper and drinks on the terrace but I sent mine back as the chicken was very dry, there was no problem and when a fresh meal was served it was delicious. Breakfast was the usual buffet of cereals, pastries or cooked options. It wasn't the best, bacon was hard, eggs didn't have a runny yolk, mushrooms weren't fresh. For an extra charge there were a few other options but no poached eggs or omelette. The staff were very helpful and happy to do so. All in all a lovely stay wish I could have stayed longer so we could enjoy the beautiful garden walks.
