"Great, historic building, not lavish by any means"
We had a comfy stay, overall Housekeeping did a fantastic job and rooms were very clean. Turn down service was a nice touch. Rooms in the main building are not exactly level - not sure about the others. Things that were placed on the furniture rolled down as if we were on hill - a bit odd when lying in bed. Grounds are lovely. Staff was excellent - very accommodating and helpful! Wine hour was not enjoyable as compared to wine hour experiences at other hotels. On our first night (July 3), they ran out of wine?? What?! The next time we tried wine hour with Benzinger on July 6, the lady pouring was rude and selective in providing service with a smile. I was standing there and was ignored while others who came AFTER me were greeted warmly. Wine wasn't even good either. The Fairmont is a generally nice place to stay in Sonoma. We prefer hotels and B&Bs in Napa so will only return if necessary.

I've stayed at several of the nicest hotels and inns in the area and place MacArthur's right up there too. Comfort and cleanliness is most important to me and this place did not disappoint. The garden setting gave a relaxed elegance. It was quiet and peaceful although I could hear some traffic noises and some noises from other guests... none of which would hamper my decision to stay again. Also lovely, was the on site restaurant for both dinner and breakfast... every meal was delicious and beautifully presented.

"Great hotel, excellent service, centrally located "
This hotel is great. It is centrally located -- right on the Sonoma main square. It is in walking distance of a dozen or two wine tasting rooms and many excellent restaurants. It is a short driving distance from many actual vineyards or if you want to take a trip into the Napa area. The service was excellent. There is a small patio in front in case you want to have some wine (either from the bar or your own -- no corkage fee) and people watch.
The only real nit is the 5 course dinner tasting menu is pricey. The food and wine is excellent, but you can easily find excellent restaurants within walking distance at a much better price point.

My husband and I throughly enjoyed our stay. It was our first time to Sonoma and we were celebrating his birthday. So many personalized and special touches at this location: uniquely designed rooms, private gardens, fresh bakery goods outside our door each morning and to top it off, the thoughtful and kind delivery of a birthday treat for my husband our last night there. All that coziness and privacy is only a 5 minute walk to the main square, which has great shopping and amazing restaurants. We will definitely be back!

In California's wine country, Sonoma revives the senses with spas, wine tasting, top-rated restaurants, and scenic countryside. Vineyards on rolling hills literally sparkle with silver streamers designed to deter birds. Historic sites from the 1800s include Lachryma Montis, the 20-acre estate of General Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo, and the Sonoma Mission, on downtown's charming eight-acre plaza.
