"Charming hotel"
Nice little hotel tucked into a side street off High Street, the main thoroughfare in Lewes. Service staff is young and attentive; they quickly fixed a problem with our sink. Room was large and comfortable though the bath had no window and became rather hot since the heated towel rack was fixed on. In house restaurant was popular, and not only with overnight guests, however we can't comment on quality as we only ate in the bar area where the light food was superb, light and sophisticated. Breakfasts are wonderful, especially the apricot, prune and fig compote. Overall a wonderful, charming hotel.

Friendly staff. Good food at the bar and for breakfast. Server at breakfast could have been more attentive as toast was forgotten and order had to be repeated. Ensure appeared rather unclean. Bath had not been rinsed out, no soap or toiletries. Overall the hotel is charming and a nice place to stay.

"A touch of the Fawlty Towers"
Arrived at the hotel at check-in time to be told the room was ready and was shown up by the proprietor. The room was still in a state of disarray as apparently they had run out of clean sheets. They apologised and insisted this would be remedied shortly but I explained I needed to use the room immediately to change as we were off to a wedding. And when we arrived back after midnight everything was in order and we slept well in the very comfy bed. In the morning, on closer inspection, some of the surfaces in the room hadn't been cleaned as well as they might have been, especially the coffee making table and the sides of the bath. Perhaps they were let down by their cleaning staff! However, the proprietors were friendly, the room was pleasant and breakfast was excellent. I'd stay there again.

"Downgrading update of this morning's review!"
To update our review: when we had breakfast, I asked if we could check out a bit late so we could go shopping. Check out is 11am and (as I remember) I Said 'only short time, we'll be back by 11.15ish' We went out only partly packed with cases open in the room and personal items out, our ipod left charging etc (something we hardly ever do) . When we got back at 11:35 the room was open and our cases gone!! After asking housekeeping, we were told we have overstayed and luggage had been removed. Housekeeping lady involved was very apologetic and said noone told her and she had packed our things carefully and go to reception. At reception a less than apologetic receptionist said we had told her just ten minutes late (I am prepared to accept that thought not my memory) and that in line with policy room was cleared and luggage was round corner. I told her that even moving closed luggage for such a short overstay was disgraceful, and packing our things, unplugging others etc was totally out of order and arguably illegal. I have never, ever in 20 years of travelling had even the crummiest hotel in the outback do this, not a 4Star hotel in England. I got an 'i,m sorry bur you were late' in a tone that was not really an apology more a telling off for being a nuisance. I would take them down to 3.0 and underline what I see other reviewers have said that it need a good hands on manager!
