The Monterey is a beautiful, old hotel. Old in a good way. The elevators have arrows that point at floor numbers, instead of a more modern digital display. Felt very Mad Men.
I arrived at the hotel far too early for check-in, so they accepted my luggage as I went off on a day trip to Otaru and the Yoichi Nikka distillery. When I finally returned at 11pm, I just picked up the room key, and the luggage was already waiting for me in the room. Very good service!
The room was a little bit small, but it's the hotel's smallest type. The duvet was very, very nice. The bathroom shower was very powerful. The bathroom mirror is heated, so even immediately after a hot shower you can still use the vanity mirror.
There was no coffee in the room, but there was tea and hot water. I did hear a train whistle once from the nearby Sapporo station, and it was easy to hear people out in the hallway, but nothing loud enough to disturb my sleep.
The hotel is a short walk from the station.

This is a Sheraton group hotel. It allows us to process the necessary documentation and kept our luggage even though the check-in is only at 1500 hours as compared to other Japanese hotels who would not even process our document.
We have a nice experience in using the onsen facility and the room is nice and clean. The only shortfall is the number of restaurants. There are several restaurants which are closed limiting the choices of our dinner.

The overall experience was good. The staff were helpful and nice. The breakfast was great. However, there were derbits in the onsen and a couple of us felt tichy afterwards, not sure whether it was due to the derbits or not. The hotel was located on the hill and quite quiet. It was a good experience to unwind yourself

"Hotel position excellent - located right at statio"
Great Bar upstairs on 13th floor. They have a Happy Hour from 6 to 7.30. No cover charge for this time, drink prices a great deal. The Barman, Namo? is very skilled and the views over Hakodate from this atmospheric movie like bar are fantastic at night.
