"Sleek hotel"
We stayed one Sunday night in Umhlanga before returning to the US. Very pleasant, stylish hotel a few miles from the beach with a roof pool with a stunning view of Durban and the bay. Convenient underground garage. Very friendly and helpful staff. The rooms are quite large and well outfitted. The location in or adjoining a mall in a business district is well-maintained. The mall has at least two restaurants -- one was closed on Sunday but the other was pretty good. A minor inconvenience was some construction or remodeling during our stay that put the elevator out of service. But really you can't go wrong choosing this hotel.

"comfortable stay in perfect setting"
Chris and Jill are lovely people who went out of their way to enure our comfort and happiness. The room was comfortable immaculately clean and tidy with a lovely view over their immaculate garden and swimming pool. The breakfast was delicious. Eminently repeatable exercise.

"Very Pleasant Stay"
Had a lovely 7 night stay at the guesthouse. Rooms were spotless, spacious and nicely furnished. Beds were comfortable and had a nice little patio area to sit in. Breakfast was delicious and there was a wide range of foods on offer. Nice little bar to help yourself to drinks and write into a little bar book. Didn't use the pool during stay but it was lovely and clean. Heather and Bob are a lovely, welcoming couple who we enjoyed spending time with chatting. They were very helpful when asked about locations of things and best way to get places. The guesthouse is only 10mins walk from the beach and I would class it as a little gem of a place to stay when at the resort.

"Good but some improvements needed"
The room was great and the staff we dealt with were mostly friendly. The check-in was not great, insufficient people on the desks and the room was not ready until 3pm. Which negatively affected our plans significantly. The cost of breakfast is nothing short of daylight robbery. You can get a very hearty breakfast at various well known restaurants across the road in the shopping centre for less than a third of the cost charged by the hotel, so you have to wonder why anyone would eat at the hotel. The location can be a bit noisy at night given the proximity to the Gateway Shopping Centre, but generally it quietens down after about midnight. The rooftop pool is quite small and really only good for a minor dip to cool off. I probably would stay at this hotel again, but I definitely would not be eating breakfast here.

"Great location and a fair price."
The hotel is good, clean and very conveniently located if you plan on visiting the Gateway Shopping Mall. Situated adjacent to the Mall, so you don't need to drive. Breakfast was very good, a wide variety and well prepared. Depending on the type of room you book, the bathroom and toilet is in the same room as the bedroom, so open plan. They bathroom and toilet do have doors however for some people the open plan set up could be uncomfortable if they prefer more privacy. The staff are not well trained. Check in staff are extremely unfriendly, don't even greet. The staff at breakfast were just the same. They walk around aimlessly instead of attending to guests. They don't offer you coffee, you need to ask. There was a couple at breakfast trying to find a high chair for their baby and the staff just stood around watching as the guest carried the chair himself to the table. They should have helped instead. They clearly have no customer service training or they're very unhappy with their jobs. Check out was just the same, really unfriendly person at the reception desk. I had to ask for an invoice instead of being asked if I needed one and that too seemed like to much of an effort for him to print it out and hand over to me.

"Convenient and Roomy"
This Protea Hotel, and there are several, is convenient to the beach an Durban's many restaurants. The rooms are spacious and well appointed. Plenty of room to work. Usually a fridge and micro wave if you can't resist taking home your restaurant goodies. Not a hotel to hang out in. You can get a drink and watch a little soccer in the small bar. That's about it. The staff is very friendly and accommodating.

Umhlanga is calling — find the perfect hotel

Everyone wants to score a deal on travel, but price is just one factor to consider when booking an unforgettable hotel. Whether you’re visiting family, attending a conference or taking a well-earned vacation in Umhlanga, having an awesome experience should be a no-brainer.

Hotwire will hook you up! From restful nights near your flight to that prime spot in the city’s heart, we’ve done our research to bring the best options to your fingertips. Book your Umhlanga hotel with us now and start your next adventure.

You’re not the average traveler — and we know it

You’ve done your homework and know exactly where you want to go. We’re here to help with some Hotwire travel geek-approved tips on how to save on your booking.

    Get away for the weekend

Hotels in bigger cities usually charge higher rates during the week, when people are traveling for business. Weekends can be a bargain! It’s the other way around for vacation spots, so if you’re looking for a beach escape, consider a mid-week trip.

    Give yourself some wiggle room

If your plans are flexible, play around with some different travel dates – a shift of a few days either way can help you save big. Prices usually jump the weekends before and after popular holidays, so we recommend steering clear of them. Or consider visiting during the off-season, when prices are generally lower.

    Plan around big events

Are prices surprisingly high? There might be a huge conference or festival in town. Consider shifting your dates if you can. Of course, if that’s why you’re going, you’ll have to bite the bullet. We’ll still work to get you the best rates out there.

    Noodle over new adventures

Set aside time to plan what you want to see, taste and discover. Nothing completes a trip, big or small, like a few new experiences! Check city apps or area websites to find out what’s new and what events are happening during your stay. Even during a family reunion, you can detour to that locals-only fish taco stand or under-the-radar music club. Your cousins will be impressed.
