Once just a quiet, rural town, Milpitas got swallowed up as the area around San Jose congealed into the Silicon Valley. There's no real downtown here, just tech campuses and retail centers lining the freeways. Milpitas' main claim to fame? It's home of the ginormous Great Mall of the Bay Area.
Although Milpitas proper may not be a bustling tourist destination, its close proximity to San Jose means you have plenty diversions at your disposal. You're only six miles from Great America theme park, eight miles from downtown San Jose, and ten miles from Santana Row, an upscale outdoor shopping center with tons of eating and entertainment options.
Art lovers will appreciate the San Jose Museum of Art, and techies enjoy the Tech Museum of Innovation. Football fans can catch a game at the new Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, and outdoor enthusiasts can go hiking at nearby Alum Rock or the Sunol Regional Wilderness. If you don't mind a little drive, head west to the lovely Santa Cruz Mountains.
