Reid's has a reputation for being posh and it doesn't disappoint. We paid a little extra to start our 4 day break in style by arriving by S class Merc limo.
The staff were very welcoming. Throughout the hotel they are lovely: always accommodating and polite.
We booked the basic room through Expedia. It was a little cramped but as we didn't spend much time in it that wasn't a problem.
We booked meals in advance at the William and Villa Cipriani restaurants but found there was no problem re-arranging things when we arrived.
There is no beach but the two pools are luxurious and the pool attendants very helpful.
The guest services office booked a day's hiking for us-we'd recommend getting up into the hills to see the island properly.
The only negative point is that you walk through parts of it, past photos of parties from the 40s and 50s,
of Winston Churchill and European royalty, and you wonder where the party is now? The billiards and bridge rooms are empty. Beautifully formal lounges seem museum-like rather than functional.
Ending on a positive note....try the hotel's 1907 Madeira. Ignore the 75 euro price because you'll only once in your life drink a wine that could just as easily have been drunk by Rupert Brook or Ernest Hemingway...and the taste is indescribable.

Clean quiet hotel above the Vie shopping centre. Good roof terrace with pools and a bar. 10 mins walk into the centre of Funchal and 5 mins walk from the harbour. The staff are attentive and courteous.

We stayed here in April 2015 and wanted to return this April. The hotel has expanded its operation by restoring the original manor house, and relocating the dining room there. The building that used to house the dining room is now a very convenient bar which serves appetizing snacks for those who do not want anything more substantial. The staff are just as friendly and helpful as before, the bedrooms just as luxurious and the breakfasts are 'to die for'. Will we return? Absolutely!

Beautiful hotel situated high on the hill with great views down over the whole of Funchal and the harbour. 5/10 minute fun drive down to the centre of Funchal. Quite and steep and some fun bends but nothing to fear. There is a free bus down to town and back again. I wouldn't recommend getting a small hire car. The staff at the hotel could not have been more pleasant, helpful and welcoming. The whole place has a real high quality feel about it. The food in the restaurant is of excellent quality and the prices very pleasantly surprised. The indoor pool and spa was a really lovely place when it wasn't hot enough to sit outside. The accommodation in the bungalows was of a great standard too. Some have more open views than others.

Nice hotel tucked away from the city center (about 30 minute walk.) Front desk staff, particularly Andre, was wonderful and very helpful. Breakfast was nice, selection of pastries, bread, fruit, meat/cheese, and made to order dishes. Private pools and entrance to ocean available. Geared toward families/older crowd, almost felt like an all inclusive resort without being all inclusive. Lots of laminated papers and signs with directions and rules, that was off putting.

"Very pleasant hotel. Staff informative and helpful"
We had no problems during our holiday. When we asked for something from reception, it was brought along. The beds were firm, the bathroom clean and the TV channels had English speaking programmes!. On my birthday I was given a complimentary bottle of champagne which was much appreciated. The waiting staff were excellent especially in the A-La-Carte restaurant and the Pool Bar. We did not use the main restaurant. The premises were impressive with plenty to do for the active and less active.

Funchal, capital of the Madeira Islands, curves along a harbor and rises up verdant mountain slopes. At the Mercado dos Lavradores market, vendors display basketry, produce, fresh fish, and profusions of flowers. The Madeira Wine Lodge, housed in a 17th-century monastery building, offers tastings and tours. A ride in a wicker toboggan down steep, narrow streets is a uniquely Funchal experience.
