On the edge of the Rocky Mountains, Colorado Springs is a friendly town with amazing trails, a few strollable neighborhoods and plenty of snow-capped vistas. Spread across the skyline west of the city, 14,115-foot Pikes Peak dominates every view. A Cog Railway takes you all the way to the top.
The high-altitude railway is accessed from the small New Age village of Manitou Springs west of town, where you’ll find the best hiking, biking and wild adventures the area has to offer. From Manitou, explore the stunning sandstone spires of Garden of the Gods, or go underground to the spooky Cave of the Winds. The Manitou Cliff Dwellings offer a glimpse into the homes of the ancient Anasazi.
Just down the road, Old Colorado City houses the original state capital and some great restaurants. And there’s plenty to do downtown, from catching a show at the Pikes Peak Center to diving into culture at the Fine Arts Center. Afterwards, enjoy a pint at one of the city’s many microbreweries.
