Old rooms, no padding in the mattress, toilet didn’t flush, floor was sticky, you could hear everything that went on outside of the room, including the toilet in the next room. You definitely get what you pay for at this hotel.

This is very much like a quaint bed and breakfast rather than a hotel. My room was in a very old house modified to accommodate paid guests. Now, if that appeals to you, this is a great option. Unfortunately, it did not appeal to me, and the fault was mine--not the people who own and run this establishment. I should have done a much better job investigating before booking this property. I have nothing but good things to say about the hostess and other employees... I messed up, not them.

South Shire is a quaint Victorian Inn on Elm Street within walking distance to the center of Bennington, VT. The Inn has a family feel and elegance. We traveled as a couple. It was easy to get to sites and enjoy fine restaurants. The Inn is in keeping with the feel of strength of the Bennington community, as a place for artists, musicians, and people's expression generally to thrive. We enjoyed our stay and would recommend South Shire.

Beware, The Brooks Motel is a misrepresented, virtual-only motel that doesn't warn it has no front desk or in-person check-in. This concept only works if the tech and the people behind it work, They didn'.  Upon arrival, I had to call, what sounded like, an overseas call center, find a random Expedia email, and fill out an online form. Then I waited 15 minutes for a room code that never arrived. After calling back, the agent's emails failed to reach my email, so she had to text me the info. Check-in took a frustrating 30 minutes. Once at the room, the keypad was completely dead. It took another 10 minutes back on the phone to get instructions on how to retrieve a physical key from a hidden lockbox.  Later, after returning from dinner, the TV remote didn't work. I texted the “call center” and was sent to a housekeeping closet, which was completely empty of batteries. When I called back again, they told me to drive to a store, buy batteries myself, and submit a receipt for reimbursement. I am a paying guest, not an employee.  If you run a digital motel, you should disclose it upfront, and ensure the tech and people behind it works, and never put guests to do your work. The Brooks Motel model, besides being incompetent, charges the same rates as full-service hotels nearby. They offered to “make it right” but when I asked for a refund they made me call yet another number to try get it, wasting more of my time. Avoid this place unless you’re ok with doing their job for them.

Air conditioning

The property has obviously been recently renovated, and looks good. The room was clean and well stocked. Here's the only issues: When I went to the desk for help, the young woman was obviously distracted by a personal conversation with a friend and not overly concerned about helping a customer. Eventually, I did receive help. The room was good....not $241 good! On top of being vastly overcharged, a "pet friendly" hotel is great, a pet friendly hotel that charges a pet fee is still good....a pet friendly hotel that charged even more after I left, when I know for a fact my dog left no mess, is unsatisfactory! Quit being so damn greedy!! Lesson learned, I'll not keep this one in mind.
