I recently stayed at the Royal Grove Hotel for a week and left with very mixed, but ultimately positive, feelings. This isn't your modern, sleek Waikiki resort, and it doesn't pretend to be. Think of it more as a classic Hawaiian throwback with incredible heart. The Downsides: The Rooms Are Dated Let's get this out of the way first:the rooms are old. The décor is straight out of the 80s/90s, with patterned carpets and furniture that has seen better days. The air conditioner in our room was quite loud, and the bathroom was functional but very basic. If you're looking for a luxurious, modern room with high-end finishes, this is not the place for you. You're paying for a place to sleep and shower, not for a resort-style experience. The Outstanding Upsides: Why You Might Still Love It 1. Location, Location, Location! You simply cannot beat this location.It's just a 3-minute walk to the world-famous Waikiki Beach, and you're surrounded by an incredible array of restaurants, shops, and cafes. Everything you could want is right at your doorstep. The convenience factor is a massive plus and saves you both time and money on transportation. 2. The room was in quite an uncomfortable position. We had a window in the wall our bed was against and it led to a hallway, also exactly where an elevator was, so every now and then we heard people come and go just a couple feet away. That window was also broken so we had no way to shut it. The bathroom wall was extremely thin and I could clearly hear my hotel neighbor’s activity when in the bathroom as well.

Good for the price.

The room was what I expected for the price. Older furnishings, mis matched furnishings, odd arrangement of furniture. The windows are single pane so NOT energy efficient or noise friendly. The window next to the stove had a shear curtain that let in lots of light in the morning. I had to wait over an hour past check in time to get my room. The AC worked well however it was fairly loud. FYI, the door does NOT automatically lock like most hotel doors. You have to make sure you push the lock button before closing. I noticed a small sign st the front desk that stated they only clean the rooms every 5 days unless you want to pay $25 per cleaning (what happened to hotel standards?). Having said all that, the location is ideal to be in the heart of Waikiki. If you are not picky about a room this is a good find. Staff is nice but could be more friendly and welcoming.

This place is smaller than a lot of properties which adds to its retro charm. The room was LARGE and had a kitchen. It was a quick walk to the beach and dining. Because it is smaller, it is easier to get in and out of. Overall - a pleasant stay.

Room was nothing like the photos on Expedia. Doors wide open, anyone can walk in and access elevators and rooms. Small lock on door handle, screws coming out of small chain lock on door. Hinges coming out of bathroom door, tape on stove. Dirt on the floor. Felt unsafe, left as soon as we found a different hotel.
