Built around a triple waterfall, South Dakota’s largest city is a dynamic and rapidly growing outpost on the Great Plains. It has a network of parks and trails for outdoorsy types, as well as a variety of activities for the family to enjoy and plenty of shopping, dining and nightlife.
Falls Park is the heart of the city, or at least its engine – and it’s an appealing introduction to the history of the region. The 123-acre park includes the ruins of an old mill and a dam once used to make hydroelectric power. The best way to get here is via the scenic route, “Phillips to the Falls.”
Curious kids will love the Imagination Studio at the Kirby Science Discovery Center, and the hearts-aflutter Sertoma Butterfly House and Marine Cove. At the Great Plains Zoo, you’ll find over a thousand animals from around the world, many native to the region. If you’re here on business, make it a “walking meeting” on one of Sioux Falls’ several public golf courses.
