Used to really like this hotel. Very chill, I liked the interior design and minimalist style. But the attention to detail is diminishing. No water bottles proved in room (free or at cost), some lights and chargers didn’t work, moldy smell in my room, shampoo and conditioner pumps didn’t work. Would be nice to have a mini fridge in the room. Positives: they’ve always given me an early check in, the bars are great (Broken Shaker), friendly staff, central location.

I spent four nights in the Freehand. We can start with the Pros. The staff were friendly and the check-in process was easy. They were able to help with a bag hold and informed of the cleaning policy and the card hold policy. There is a cute photobooth in the lobby and a nice bar with decent drinks. The communal area was busy with some people sleeping on the couches and others working on their laptops. There's a vibe of hostel - hotel mix. The linens were comfortable and the towels are plush. The water pressure is decent and the water gets HOT which is a plus. The Cons - my bodywash was empty and I asked for a housekeeping run to refill it. It remained empty for three days despite me asking each morning. The first time I excused it as an accident / they just forgot. The second time I thought maybe I asked too early and they haven't gotten to the room yet - by evening it was still empty. I asked for the little bottle at the front desk, so I wasn't stinking up the city. Then day 3 I asked for housekeeping PLUS soap and by the fourth day it was finally filled and the room was tidied. The elevator is a tad slow but not something to ding points off of. I stayed in a private queen room and it was quite tiny and old with a shower and small desk, closet, and safe.

Hidden Gem

We had a private nest for our family of 4 with the 2 sets of bunks. Extremely comfortable for our needs because we were out sightseeing all day long anyway. Bathroom and lockers were fine because we didnt have much. Drinks in the Broken Shaker our last evening were great, as we had our own comfortable nook to chill and cool down. Tried breakfast one morning but they were slow to start at 7am and we were ready to go, so we went elsewhere. Used the laundry room and it was fine. Convenient to have it. Exterior could use some updating and there wasnt much they could do about the bum nextdoor urinating as we exited one morning. But for the price and proximity we couldnt beat it.
