The location was great - we were close to so many places to go in the city and the area was super walkable and near train stations. The room itself was really expensive and extremely dirty. It seems like they literally only change the sheets and do a quick bathroom clean and that’s it. Every other surface was dusty and grimy. While it was one of the cheapest options in Chicago, for the price we did pay I was surprised at how gross it was. Even cheapo motels clean better.

Freehand Chicago is nice place to stay if you are tight on money. This is a share space so truth no lie if you got bad mates you could have a bad trip, but the mates I roomed with was nice and kept to themselves. The area is nice i could walk everywhere and UNO is right next door, but there are tons of other there too. The bed was nice but the power outlet doesn't work so i have to charge everything with everyone else. The shower is kind of small and not that much room to move. IDK if there was any room cleaning but if someone destroy the toilet it would be really annoying. All in all this place is a great, social place to stay for a traveler on a budget who plans to spend most of their time out exploring the city.

The pictures on the website did not translate for me...the building is very old, the AC was not cold at all...I would be hard pressed to return for a stay, but I would visit the upstairs bar (cool vibe).

Great staff , comfortable, clean and easy access to train and bus lines. Has a bar with food in the hotel as well but also many other options located nearby. I didn't realize the room didn't come with a fridge and microwave. Otherwise, it's a great location to stay when visiting Chicago!

Chicago Getaway

We thoroughly enjoyed our 2 nights at Freehand Chicago! It’s a great old property, restored with lots of special touches and upgrades. First night was a bit uncomfortable, due to an issue with the AC in our room, but they gave us a cooling fan for the second night, which worked great. Staff was awesome…especially Hannah and Jake, the bartenders. Excellent selection of specialty coffees and teas, as well as small bites and sandwiches. Cocktails were amazing!

Wouldn’t Stay Again – Disappointing Experience This is my honest review. I stayed in two different rooms—neither had working AC. The hotel gave me a small, dusty fan and later two free drinks, but the issue was never fixed. Rooms were small, dusty, poorly lit, and very basic. No fridge, no coffee maker, no ice bucket. Towels didn’t match, and there weren’t enough. Staff were friendly, and the location is great, but that’s about it. Several guests also thought they had booked private rooms and were surprised to be in shared dorms. Spend the extra money and stay elsewhere.
