Sitting pretty on the Chesapeake Bay, Annapolis is all about the water. You'll find scrumptious seafood, nautical themed bars and ample opportunities to get out on the waves (sunset cruise anyone?). Not surprisingly, Annapolis is also the home of the U.S. Naval Academy, whose leafy campus makes for a pleasant ramble.
The cobblestone streets of Annapolis are ripe for exploring. Delve into history at the Hammond-Harwood House, a beautifully preserved home dating from the 18th century. The William Paca House, another colonial beauty, has fabulous gardens. Nearby, you can tour the 1772 Maryland State House, the oldest state capitol in continuous use.
Stroll down to City Dock for a look at the life aquatic, then head out for a sail on a cruise around the bay. Annapolis is pure heaven for crustacean lovers, with its all-you-can-eat crab shacks and more polished restaurants serving up tasty seafood platters. If time allows, take a road trip over to the Eastern Shore, which has charming waterfront towns and seemingly endless stretches of scenic coastline.
