Cragwood Country House Hotel

Ambleside Road, Windermere - Map

The Cragwood is located in the heart of the Lake District on a beautiful estate on Lake Windermere. We could have stayed here for a week. It was so peaceful, relaxing and lovely. The staff was so helpful and available to us whenever we needed something. The food was delicious. We had a "light snack" for dinner which was actually 2 huge egg salad sandwiches with chips for me and sausages and mashed potatoes for my mother. We could hardly finish them there was so much! There was a huge selection of food for breakfast and it was wonderful. The room was clean, very comfortable and quiet. Everything was completely updated and cared for. We slept very well. Although the Cragwood may be a bit more expensive than other bed and breakfasts, it was well worth it for the comfort and relaxation we experienced. I would go back without reservation. I recommend it to anyone.

"Great hotel in Windermere"
We stayed for 7 days and found it very comfortable. There was a great range of breakfast food and drink available and all food was of a great standard. When asked advise about walks the owners were very helpful and let us borrow maps and guides

"Very nice hotel next to the cruise spot"
Right next to lake cruise port and town. I prefer on site hotel parking rather than the valet parking (£20 per night) a few mins walk away. Restaurant and lobby rooms have nice view of lake Windermere. Outdoor garden area with lake view with chairs and tables. No AC on our room, but a desk fan provided in wardrobe, can open window. Excellent and helpful staff.

"Wonderful old hotel"
Everything was excellent. Freshed cooked breakfast to order. Two small concerns. No elevator so be sure to request a first floor room if walking up stairs is a problem. Also the Nanny Brow does not have a restaaurant so all other meals must be taken elsewhere. However, there is so much to see and do in the lake district, we were always outside anyway.

"Ideal for exploring the Lakes"
We stayed here to meet up with friends. From the warm welcome at Reception to being shown to our rooms, it was clear customer service was good. Our room was in building behind the hotel and was spacious, even having a settee where so many hotel rooms have only one chair. The window behind the dressing table afforded a good view of the mountains. The bathroom was well designed. Being thirsty after our journey we requested a pot of tea in the bar and this was served with complimentary biscuits-nice touch. We chose to eat in the restaurant that night (booking essential) and the menu had a wide variety of choice at reasonable prices. For breakfast, you could help yourself to cereals, fruit juices, fresh fruit, yogurt, seeds etc. and there was a menu of other items which were prepared once you had ordered. My husband was delighted to see porridge was included. Breakfast is served until midday to allow people to go for a walk first and there were some suggestions printed on the back of the menu. Having checked out, we spent the day in Grasmere but staff were quite happy when we asked if we could use the car park again on our return until we finally left. We would certainly look at staying here again - and take a walk before breakfast!

"Nice hotel -watch out for credit card charges"
I would have given this hotel a superb rating if it was not for the nickel and dimeing of the management. I know it's a little thing but it really got up my whatsit, on check out they charged me a $5 fee to use my credit card to pay for extra's. now for $25 add on $5 that is exorbitant. Having said that it's a nice comfortable hotel, the restaurant provides great food and service. Parking is a bit tight but it works welll enough.

"Pleasant location"
This hotel is set in a quiet location away from the other hotels in Waterhead bay however there is awkward access from the road. There is no restaurant on site but there are plenty of places to eat nearby. It seems to act as an annexe to their other hotel and although it has a pleasant garden there is now no lounge as this was turned into another bedroom. The rooms are spacious and clean but basic. The freshly cooked breakfasts are delicous and remain the best thing about this place. The reception/bar area is staffed by people in the office so a bell has to be rung in prefer to get attention. The staff are friendly and helpful when you see them.

Ambleside is calling — find the perfect hotel

Everyone wants to score a deal on travel, but price is just one factor to consider when booking an unforgettable hotel. Whether you’re visiting family, attending a conference or taking a well-earned vacation in Ambleside, having an awesome experience should be a no-brainer.

Hotwire will hook you up! From restful nights near your flight to that prime spot in the city’s heart, we’ve done our research to bring the best options to your fingertips. Book your Ambleside hotel with us now and start your next adventure.

You’re not the average traveler — and we know it

You’ve done your homework and know exactly where you want to go. We’re here to help with some Hotwire travel geek-approved tips on how to save on your booking.

    Get away for the weekend

Hotels in bigger cities usually charge higher rates during the week, when people are traveling for business. Weekends can be a bargain! It’s the other way around for vacation spots, so if you’re looking for a beach escape, consider a mid-week trip.

    Give yourself some wiggle room

If your plans are flexible, play around with some different travel dates – a shift of a few days either way can help you save big. Prices usually jump the weekends before and after popular holidays, so we recommend steering clear of them. Or consider visiting during the off-season, when prices are generally lower.

    Plan around big events

Are prices surprisingly high? There might be a huge conference or festival in town. Consider shifting your dates if you can. Of course, if that’s why you’re going, you’ll have to bite the bullet. We’ll still work to get you the best rates out there.

    Noodle over new adventures

Set aside time to plan what you want to see, taste and discover. Nothing completes a trip, big or small, like a few new experiences! Check city apps or area websites to find out what’s new and what events are happening during your stay. Even during a family reunion, you can detour to that locals-only fish taco stand or under-the-radar music club. Your cousins will be impressed.
