This is an amazing property for the price. The place does need some updates. But the location is amazing and the staff was super helpful. If you are the kind of person that is out and exploring all day and need a central home base I absolutely recommend.
It saddens me to give this review but this hotel has gotten too the point it in my opinion is no longer habitable to stay in.
I first stayes here back in the late 1980s right after a major makeover and truly its the last time any money has been put into it. Same 35yr old carpet in all the rooms that are filled with stains and i am sure mold underneath. Hallways are loaded on the second floor with stains from roof leaks that they blame heavy rain on. No kidding. Of course the roof will leak when it never is maintained!! I get the no ac even though rooms can get hot. Took the staff a bit to find me a working fan. Window in my room had no screen as i needed to put fan in window to get air flow. Doors stick, frig in this room froze all my itesms and stuck to grt open. The walls and floor on second fllor i am rather confident has mold due to all the moisture from the roof leaking. The outside porch has roughly ten chairs due to over the years the sets they did have kept getting old and the ones on the deck are in need of replacment. So not enough for guests to use. The staff was good but have a tough job as one told me the owner has not been to this hotel in 20yrs!! You. An tell as again its in poor unsafe and unhealthy condition and what is working is held together by a duct tape approach. Shame on city of Grand Marais Business Council and State of MN for allowing this place to remain operational. Shame on the owner for doing absolutely nothing to this property.
Very outdated and run down property. The location is great but not enough to save this place. The smells were really the hardest part to get over. Very stinky, stained carpets and just plain filthy!
The bedding was from the late 1980’s. After taking to a handful of local community business owners I learned the owner of this property also owns three more in town. The conditions were appalling- mold, dirt, furnishings broken, and luke warm water and way to drain tub. I met former staff who informed me that the owner resides out of state and never checks in. I am appalled that state and city allows these buildings to be operational. To top it off I heard from three sources that the local food pantry has been used at times to provide breakfast items for guests. This is outrageous.

Until it gets needed repairs, I would not a stay
The location and staff were fabulous but the facility was not in great condition. In our room, there was no hot water in the sink, just a dribble of brown. The hot water worked in the shower the first night, spotty the next day and completely off the next. The AC did not work at all. The deck was just a concrete slab with gull droppings and the roof leaked after a heavy rain
Friendly staff, decent prices especially for the area and time of year. No good protein choices for breakfast - challenging for a diabetic (but im mostly prepared for that). Enjoyed the back patio and views. We will keep this hotel in mind for future trips.
Great location, that’s it. It was an old property, not kept up. Our faucet in the bathroom was loose, floors weren’t clean. Ceiling in hallway falling in….
It’s lakefront but forget that.. the picture showing the lakefront patio must have been 20 years old. It was disgusting! Seagull poop everywhere, dirty and all the lounge chair cushions should have been replaced 10 years ago.
Do yourself a favor, spend a little more money and stay elsewhere.

We felt the biggest asset to this hotel was the outside patio facing Lake Superior. unfortunately, we never sat out there because it was generally unkept and lots of bird droppings. The windows in our room were also so full of bird droppings, so disgusting we were reluctant to open our drapes.

There is no air-conditioning. This was fine as it cooled off in the evenings while we were there. Hopefully it does for you as well. Very friendly Staff. No issues at all. Its not up to date. Its perfect! Maybe a bit over priced. Worlds greatest doughnuts right next door. 😋
Hotel is in a great location with great views of the lake. Right in town so walkable to shops and restaurants and harbor.
Hotel is old (1950’s) and is in disrepair. Buckets in hallway to catch rainwater from leaking roof. Room doors are loose from the hinges and need to be lifted to close them.
Most beautiful view of the lake. The front desk lady is so kind and helpful. Definitely a little rough around the edges but this spot is worth every penny!

Some misses and some passes.
The people were very friendly and helpful. The building itself is older and is need of repair (roof leak) and general upkeep. Needs a good carpet cleaning. I was disappointed to find that there isn't an elevator, but it was only one flight of stairs. It would of been more of an issue if I was alone. There was a musty smell when first entering the room, and I was bummed to find the room had no AC, but they supplied a box fan for the window though one window did not have a screen. The fan was necessary to keep comfortable. Also, disappointed the room lacked a coffee maker and/or microwave. But liked that the room fridge was lager than usual; which we need. The bed was very comfortable and clean.
I can not say enough positive things about this hotel!
Monica and all of the staff were very accommodating!
Yes, it’s older. It’s actually the oldest hotel in Grand Marais. If you are looking for a cozy place to rest your head after exploring the city or hiking the beautiful trails this is the place!
Comfy bed, great views of the lake! (Make sure to request a lake facing room)
Right dead center of the town, very walkable location!
