Our room for 3 people can actually fit a family of 5 since there are two double beds. The facilities are up to date and look relatively new. The Matsuyama Castle and shopping area are just around the corner. We drove there (hotel covers parking till 10am for 1000 yen) so I am not sure about the commute from train or subway stations. But there is a train stop right outside that goes to Dogo Onsen which is just 10 mins away.

The Hotel Route Inn in Saijo was a convenient place to stay and was a resonable price. We had a rental car which made it easy to find and the parking was free. The beds were hard but the rest of the hotel was nice. My daughter and I went into the Japanese bath, which was very relaxing. They provided Pyjamas and slippers as well as basic toiletries. There was a good variety at breakfast which was buffet style and very filling. The staff were very helpful but I don't think anyone spoke much English. The hotel is close to the Asahi Beer Factory, which offers free tours! Saijo is a short drive to Imabari where we started the Shimanami Kaido Bicycle ride.

APA hotel has an excellent location right next to the train station. The rooms were nicely appointed and clean inside. However the beds were super springy and very uncomfortable. They were way below what I would expect for a large chain hotel. I had the worst rest in my entire stay in Japan at this hotel. Their other amenities such as holding luggage after we checked out, so we could explore the area before we moved on was helpful and well appreciated though.

We liked it! I wasn't expecting the hotel to have a bath, but they did, and the breakfast for the price we paid for the hotel was very good. We will definitely be looking into this again when we visit Sakaide.
