I was very disappointed with my experience at this hotel. The staff, especailly some of the dinning hostesses were surprisingly unfriendly and at times even hostile. The food options were extremely basic and lacked flavor. Dinning reservations were very hard to get and if you were lucky they reserved it at 9 pm, which is very inconvenient, and the overall service and food in the dinning area was not good, not fine dining. The hotel felt overcrowded and definitely overpriced for the quality of services provided. Bar drinks were subpar, and getting a drink by the pool took forever due to lack of staff available outside. The overall service was poor and lacked friendliness one would expect from a 5 star establishment. I wouldn't even rate it 3 stars. The only positive aspect were the kids club and water park-the staff in the kids' area were kind and engaging. Other than that I would not return and do not recommend this hotel. They need to polish customer service.

It was good overall. The place is very big and we feel like we spent the whole time walking. We did not like the quality of the food. But I have to say the green areas are beautiful and only for that I enjoyed it very much. I was impressed with the lack of sand everywhere like I've seen in other hotels. I feel like they control that issue successfully. I appreciated the employees that were taking the algae. It certainly helped a lot, but I didn't mind getting in the pools when the beach wasn't nice enough to my liking, because the pools are very, very nice.

Everything was great: the service, the food, the entertainment, the facilities. The only thing I noticed was that the bathrooms need updating, especially the access to the shower. I also think the beds need replacing because they felt like they were sinking in where we slept.

The hotel was very clean. Upon arrival be sure to book your dinner at the restaurants so that you are able to have a nice dinner in ALL of them if possible. I lived the seafood and stake ones (these are the ones we were able to reserve, others were fully booked). Beach is beautiful and peaceful, water is clear and waves are easy soft, very kid friendly. If you don't know how to swim like me, this is the beach to go to. Be sure to look at the boards by the pool and by lobby restroom, they will tell you about the activities they will have. Entertainment at the pool was great.

Exceptional Service Recovery by Manuel Santamaria! Our June 2025 stay at Barceló Maya Colonial started with significant challenges: a misleading quote for a stay extension, costing us extra and forcing us to rebook flights and excursions multiple times. Our room also had issues like a broken fridge, running toilet, and faulty AC. The situation dramatically improved thanks to Manuel Santamaria, the Accommodation Manager. Manuel personally intervened, demonstrating an outstanding commitment to guest satisfaction. He listened attentively and proactively offered significant accommodations for the rest of our stay, including a move to a premium suite, Premium privileges, and a much appreciated couples massage. These gestures not only resolved our immediate discomfort but truly showcased Barceló's potential for excellent service recovery. Manuel's professionalism and genuine desire to ensure our comfort made a profound difference, transforming a difficult experience into a positive one. We are incredibly grateful for his direct and effective approach. While initial issues were frustrating, Manuel Santamaria's exemplary service has restored our confidence in Barceló Maya Colonial. Thank you, Manuel, for demonstrating true hospitality. We can’t wait to return for another visit.

We had such an excellent trip to the Barcelo Maya Colonial! As a family with children (7 & 14) we have been to the area three times now. This was, by far, our favorite trip to date. The 5 resorts are all essentially linked together. You stay in one but can use any of the pools, restaurants, and activities at all of them. There is a double-decker bus that makes stops all around the complex and runs almost 24/7.

Stay somewhere else. I don’t know why this property is so hyped up but we were utterly disappointed and we are used to bare minimum and 3star hotels, we are not fancy travelers by any means. First off, check in took well over 30 minutes and we were lied to at check in (told they didn’t have 2 rooms close by at first, then later it turns out that they did in fact have 2 rooms close by). Beds are horrible, mattresses are so soft that you fall into the middle of them. Shower head has no pressure so it takes double the amount of time. The food in the buffets is bland and flavorless, not much better in ala carte restaurants. The steakhouse has the smallest portions on the planet so be warned because even my 10 year old was left hungry after that dinner. The beach was incredibly filthy with seaweed (not their fault) but at every other resort the staff clean it, not here. Here the seaweed just sits and accumulates and stinks sooooo bad it’s impossible to get anywhere near the water. The water is also full of rocks so the fact that it’s full of seaweed as well makes for a dangerous situation as you can’t see the rocks and we all cut up our feet. They have 5/6 lonely sad dolphins swimming around in the smallest little pool. Very sad and why they haven’t relocated these gentle creatures to a bigger space is still beyond me. Bars are also a hit or miss with drinks. Overall, just a disappointing stay and nothing impressive or nice or memorable about it at all. We won’t be back.

We had a great time at Barceló Maya Colonial. It’s a family-friendly hotel, perfect for relaxing and spending quality time together. Our stay was very pleasant and the service was excellent — the staff was always attentive, friendly, and helpful. The facilities were well-maintained, with direct beach access, nice pools, and plenty of entertainment and dining options. We would definitely come back!
