For the first time ever in 30 years of traveling we walked out. Let’s start with first impressions. The smell in the lobby was terrible, a mix of mustiness, pot, cleaning products and a large bird cage. Then the stairwell to the second floor was somehow worse with carpet that obviously hadn’t been cleaned in a very long time. On the second floor we passed a kid who was housekeeping barefoot and shirtless, no joke, carrying armloads of sheets with no shirt on! I thought we still had a health department here in NY. Then the room. A huge opening in the bathroom wall two feet from the bed, separating the toilet from your bed by only a shower curtain. As the room only smelled marginally better than the hall, we opened the balcony door to air things out, only to be hit by nauseating clouds of pot smoke, presumably from the neighbors’ balconies. The more we looked around, the more we noticed, peeling paint, soap scum on the fixtures, old shower curtains, filth under the toilet rim. Within an hour we had booked a room at the Clarion (for $30 less) grabbed our bags and left. For $180/night we had expected a minute standard to be met and this fell short.
