More Than a Hotel: My Journey Through Central Oregon Some people collect souvenirs. I collected people. Their kindness, their laughter, their stories, and the way they made me feel became the greatest treasures I brought home. This is not simply a story about the places I visited. It is a story about the people who made those places unforgettable. My journey through Central Oregon began when I traveled to Bend with my mom. Because she uses a walker, even the simplest outings can sometimes feel complicated. I am always watching the ground ahead of her, checking for steps, looking for accessible entrances, and wondering whether people will be patient. Throughout our time in Bend, people were extraordinarily kind to her. They held doors, gave her time to move at her own pace, offered assistance, and treated her with patience and dignity. Those gestures may have seemed small to the people offering them, but they meant everything to me. When you love someone whose body no longer moves as easily as it once did, you notice the people who make the journey gentler. I certainly noticed them. Later, I returned to Bend on my own and spent two nights at the Campfire Hotel. From the moment I arrived, the hotel felt like much more than a place to sleep. The staff made it feel alive.
