We’ve stayed at several all-inclusives in Cancun and were excited to try Riu Palace Peninsula after hearing great things. Arrival was disappointing. No one greeted us, and check-in felt transactional. I had emailed for months requesting king beds and asked about a possible upgrade. Our adult children received kings, but my husband and I were given doubles and told nothing else was available. I asked to be notified if something opened up, but never was — even though upgrades to others were offered the next day. The lobby, restaurants, and grounds are beautiful, but the rooms feel worn and not 4- or 5-star quality. Sinks cracked. There was sand in our beds and on the floor the first night. Housekeeping corrected it the next day and was wonderful afterward. Food was a highlight — especially the macaroons, ice cream, Krystal restaurant, buffet crepes, and even the French fries. Drinks tasted good but seemed diluted as our group drank quite a bit with minimal effects except with beer/wine. The Super Bowl party was heavily promoted, but only commercials were playing until guests complained and the game was turned on at the coin toss. Many were upset. Late checkout was $10 per hour per guest, and the front desk suggested I leave early for the airport despite having 4.5 hours. Most staff (except front desk) were phenomenal. The hotel feels run down and in need of its upcoming remodel. Unfortunately, nearly our entire group got a stomach flu during or right after the trip.

The staff were fun and always accommodating. They always kept the resort beautiful and clean. The only thing I wish was a little better was the food. Wasn’t terrible just wasn’t the best!

We picked this place because we read the food was amazing… could not disagree more! The themed restaurants were a major disappointment. The food looked beautiful but lacked in flavor and repeatability. We did try room service. The options were bagged chips with canned nacho cheese, or 3 very depressing deli sandwich. The room we got was not what we booked. We asked for a room with 2 beds and got a room with 1 bed. All other rooms were booked and changes could not be made. The evening entertainment was all over the place from little to nothing available to many different things in 5-30 min time slots. By the time we went to join it was ending. If you like a club scene you may enjoy the party experience they offer here. The only reason I couldn’t rate this lower is because the staff were truly kind and welcoming. The facility was clean, despite being able to see the wear and tear in the rooms, pool and public shared spaces. The beach was beautiful!! Nice sand, warm water, little to no seaweed. Definitely rocks on one side but they had a cleaner side for families and swimmers looking to climb in.

Dated rooms, food was pretty mid, the staff and the entertainment were the best part of this stay! I’ve stayed at 2 other RIU locations which is what brings us back… but I’d definitely say this was my least favorite location.
