The Hawthorne was an elegant, friendly port in a snowstorm after we lost power at home. We were delighted that our dog could join us there, and the staff was warmly welcoming to all of us. The building and neighborhood are rich with Historic charm, the staff is attentive, and the tavern with its fireplace and beautiful wood paneling is a distinctive spot for a meal or a drink. Nathaniel would be proud.

This is a very well kept Historic Hotel that will immediately make you feel like you're in the 1920s! The staff is super friendly, the rooms and bathrooms are very clean, Nathaniel's restaurant is delicious, and the location feels truly premium, right across the Salem Common and connecting you to main Salem streets at walking distance (for real for real!). I visited as a solo traveler, and would 100% recommend it.
They provide a fully functional letter box, assisted daily by USPS.
Floors across the common areas are covered with gorgeous carpets.
Location: 10/10.

Front desk: Horrible customer service from the girls at the time I did my check in, every question that I did was answered with attitude like it was obvious. No instruction was given for the parking and how to get in from there. At the time for checkout, the guy K did his job and makes me feel more welcome but I was actually leaving the place.

Very nice staff, clean room, and The Tavern has great food! We were very happy with our 4-day stay, and we would stay again. Small but comfortable room, small but perfectly adequate bathroom with great hot water and water pressure. Thin walls so you can all hear each other. That didn’t bother us but could bother some. Well kept-up historic old building. We definitely recommend staying here, and everything is within walking distance.

Plumbing must be very old as it took 10 minutes for the water to heat up every time i stayed here. Showers were very weak which was a subpar experience. Hard to control room temp so in winter it is so warm in the rooms. The hotel is a beautiful old hotel with not so beautiful old plumbing. Staff at front desk are great as i am sure tgey get these complaints all rhe time.

The room smelt of smoke and aggravated our chests. Coughing all night. We visited from the UK and whilst I’d go back to Salem, I wouldn’t stay at the Hawthorne again. Such a shame

We only stayed one evening at the Hawthorne. The guest staff was very friendly and the rooms were spotless. I would definitely stay again as it is within walking distance to all the attractions. They also have ample parking for you to park you vehicle. A+

We stayed here because it was one thing on our bucket list and we like history and haunted stuff. I have to say the room was very clean and the staff fantastic as it was our wedding anniversary also. We had asked if we were able to stay in a particular room and they allowed us too. We definitely would stay here again. We had a great time.

My girlfriend and I stayed at the Hawthorne Hotel in Salem this weekend for our first Valentine’s Day together, and we absolutely loved it. The entire experience felt special from the moment we arrived. The architecture, artwork, and historic layout give the hotel so much character, and the atmosphere perfectly captures Salem’s classic, slightly spooky charm without ever feeling gimmicky. The vibe is really what makes this place stand out — cozy, historic, and just mysterious enough to make the stay memorable. We even had two small moments that felt a little… suspicious on the paranormal side, which honestly just added to the fun and the story of the trip. Beyond that, the service was excellent across the board. Everyone we interacted with was friendly, welcoming, and helpful, and the location couldn’t be better for exploring Salem on foot. Overall, it was a fantastic stay and a perfect place to spend a Valentine’s weekend. We’d absolutely come back again.
