The Old School

Portnahaven, Islay Island - Map
"Beautiful, spacious, and quiet location"
A wonderful stay. Portnahaven is a quaint and quiet little town. The owners of the property did a beautiful job restoring and modernizing the property. It retains the exterior and charm of a historical building, but the inside is top notch quality. The nearby pub has tons of friendly locals and a good assortment of drinks + good food. One of the town's fishermen, Neil, supplied two large lobsters and this was the most fantastic dinner which I cooked and enjoyed the same evening. The drives in the morning or back evening are lovely, with a view across the water of Bowmore and a beautiful coastline. Lots of space and 4 bedrooms. I thought I paid for a single of the rooms, but turns out I rented the entire property, was a great deal. I wish I'd brought my entire family here. Would definitely stay again.

Islay House

"Queen of the Hebrides"
Thoroughly enjoyed Islay House. It is the perfect combination of comfort and elegance in a magnificent setting. The room had beautiful views across Loch Indaal, lovely furnishings and appointments and all the amenities one could need (even reliable Wifi with Internet otherwise apparently often difficult to access on Islay). Beds and linen are super comfortable. The underfloor heating in the bath room makes it very inviting to take a bath in the free standing bath tubs again with views over the loch. A selection of cooked breakfast was served daily in what used to be the billiard room again with magnificent views over the lawns and further out to the sea. It was excellent and I loved the eggs benedict with Scottish salmon. The afternoon tea (very understandably) seems to be very popular also with the locals and it was always busy. The quality of service was first class and very personal from greeting upon arrival in the spectacular reception area with the grand fireplace, through the travel tips for exploring the island and for special bottlings at the distilleries, to our ease of departure. The "Peat Cutter" bar has an excellent selection of whisky with quite a few rare bottlings both on display and to sample. In particular the range of the Scotch Malt Whisky Society's rare single cask malts on offer is a very exciting addition to all the standard distillery bottlings. It truly felt like being at home in a private country house. Will definitely return to Islay House

You’re not the average traveler — and we know it

You’ve done your homework and know exactly where you want to go. We’re here to help with some Hotwire travel geek-approved tips on how to save on your booking.

    Get away for the weekend

Hotels in bigger cities usually charge higher rates during the week, when people are traveling for business. Weekends can be a bargain! It’s the other way around for vacation spots, so if you’re looking for a beach escape, consider a mid-week trip.

    Give yourself some wiggle room

If your plans are flexible, play around with some different travel dates – a shift of a few days either way can help you save big. Prices usually jump the weekends before and after popular holidays, so we recommend steering clear of them. Or consider visiting during the off-season, when prices are generally lower.

    Plan around big events

Are prices surprisingly high? There might be a huge conference or festival in town. Consider shifting your dates if you can. Of course, if that’s why you’re going, you’ll have to bite the bullet. We’ll still work to get you the best rates out there.

    Noodle over new adventures

Set aside time to plan what you want to see, taste and discover. Nothing completes a trip, big or small, like a few new experiences! Check city apps or area websites to find out what’s new and what events are happening during your stay. Even during a family reunion, you can detour to that locals-only fish taco stand or under-the-radar music club. Your cousins will be impressed.
