Fabulous location. Terrible experience.
I stayed in Hutong Inn only one night. Luckily for me! The room was very small with unpleasent smell inside. Bathroom was small as well and not so clean as it should be. The hotel staff was rather helpful and speaking English. The bigest advantage of the hotel is its location, not so far from the subway - approx. 5 min and some other touristic points like Drum Tower. There are also a lot of restaurants offering various cuisine in the area.

Good budget hotel
Considering the price you pay, I think this is quite a reasonable hotel. In terms of English standard, it's more like Premier Inn than Holiday Inn, but none the less adequate. Yes the bathroom is a wet room, and the bed is hard, but I went to my friend's flat and found that they had the same type of bed and wetroom so I guess that's the standard in China. I wouldn't say that it is 100% perfect,but not bad for the price. I booked a Deluxe room through agoda and got a nice double room on 3/F (2nd Floor in English speaking) and I can see clock tower from my window which is quite nice. When I returned early one afternoon I managed to take a peek at the Chinese-style room next door (319) which seems quite nice too! However as there is no lift it would be very difficult if you have heavy luggage or difficulty to walk.The location is not bad for Beijing. I managed to walk to Drum tower fairly easily via the hutongs so it's quite nice. It is relatively close enough to the subway which links to most tourist sights (Xizhimen for Beijing N Station - train to Badaling, Olympic Park for Bird's Next, Qian Men for shopping and Tiananmen Square, Dongzhimen for Airport Express, etc.) However, there is contruction work going on for Line 8 extension, so part of the road to the station is next to contruction site (boarded) where padestrians, motorbike, bicycles etc all shared one narrow walkway which is not very good. Also the main street is quite busy, not getting used to Chinese customs I wasn't able to 'cross the road', despite knowing that there are some more restaurants, a MacDonald's and a chain 24-hr convenient store!!! Only managed to cross roads on the 3rd day. Another drawback of the hotel is that taxi driver will not be able to find it, whether you have written down the Chinese address or not, it is particularly hard with the construction going on too. So my tip is to print off the google map, and let the driver know that the hutong is opposite the 7-day Inn hotel (Bright Yellow Building). From Subway, go to exit G and walk down the main street.Overall, this hotel is value for money, but do not go for the cheapest room. If you'd like to taxi everywhere, look elsewhere. But if you don't mind walking, lingering in the hutongs, seeing everyday life, using subway etc, that this is not a bad bet.

A serviceable room in a great area.
Overall, I can't really fault this place, considering the price paid. Its not the Ritz by any means, but its certainly quite functional for sure. The best thing about the place is the surrounding neigborhood. Its a very cool unrestored "Hutong" area with all sorts of interesting back streets that you can spend hours just walking around. Don't stay here if you want concierge service, mints on your pillow, and a 4 star restaurant on premises. However, if you want an affordable, serviceable room in a good area, I'd recommend it.

More hostel than hotel
Hotel was more like a hostel , small rooms (there were a lot of rooms with no windows) , with no wardrobes or closet area. Bathroom was good size and everything worked well and rooms were cleaned everyday. Computer and TV in room, wi-fi worked well. Beds usual hardness for China. Staff were helpful but gave the impression that they wouldn't go the extra mile if you needed them to, just a point in the right direction and no more. Nicely positioned in the Hutongs ,less than 10 mins walk from the subway and just behind the bell and drum towers. Only a short walk from Houhai bar street.

The worst hotel we have ever stayed
1) Room on the 1st floor, wet and bad smell;2) outside the window, a wall, no sun light and wind;3) ultra-small room and bathroom.
