I stayed at Sarova Stanley for one night after a Masai Mara safari. Staff was formal and courteous. The breakfast buffet at the Thorn Tree has a large spread with passable food quality. The fruit juices and fruits on offer are quite exceptional, but this is usual in East Africa. The quality of the dinner (fried tilapia with chips) was somewhat disappointing. I would suggest visiting a local place called "Ranalo" which is just a couple of minutes' walk away from the hotel instead. It was extremely pleasant to swim in the pool as it was heated (lukewarm water).

Good hotel with friendly staff. Unfortunately as we checked out and reached the jeep to take us to the airport (extra $45 pp) the receptionist came running claiming EXTRA payment of $75 pp per game drive. This was not stated anywhere nor were we informed at any point. This was sad end to an otherwise good experience.

2nd visit here and its fabulous - staff, rooms, facilities all great. Friendly and fun, the walkway to view the hippos is extra special, lots of species can be seen from there alone. Food - great choice, varied menu. We came away seriously impressed again, and intend to go back. Wonderful

We spent a week in the Masai Mara. The Serena lodge is the heart of the Masai Mara conservancy which is the best kept part of the entire area. The roads are better, the animals are protected and it is the perfect destination for game drives. The Serena lodge is the only place to stay in the area and there really is no other place you would want to go. It is located a few km from the airstrip (yes you do want to fly in, don't drive from Nairobi) on top of a high mesa that looks out dozens of miles in all directions. The property is amazing with a pool, workout facilities and an excellent spa. The staff is exceptionally friendly and accommodating and you will want for nothing. Look out your window each morning and see everything from baboons to buffalo to antelope and giraffes. They have many Land Cruisers with pop tops for game drives and the animals really are incredible. Highly recommend the balloon ride. The master pilot, Dan, is incredible and the vistas are amazing. Not cheap but worth the adventure. On Wednesday night there is an excellent talk by local researchers from the Hyena study camp which is fascinating as well. I can't imagine wanting to stay anywhere else.
