"Old World charm in the heart of Cuenca "
We spent a wonderful week at Los Balcones and would absolutely recommend it. Stepping into the hotel is like stepping into another era. It is beautifully decorated and immaculately clean. We stayed in habatacion 11 which overlooks the intersection of Presidente Borrero and Gaspar Sangurima. The balcony affords a view of the beautiful blue domes of the Cathedral of The Immaculate Conception and the surrounding green mountains. The bed is fabulous, the bathroom is beautiful, and the shower is AMAZING! The restaurant, Sole Mio, located in the courtyard is elegant and the food is fantastic. We are looking forward to dining there when we return to live in Cuenca in a few months. Breakfast, which is served on the upper balcony, features delicious omelets, local fruits, empanadas, salchicha, pancakes, café, and more. We had breakfast there every day and enjoyed the conviviality of the staff. Having said this, what makes Hotel Los Balcones a most pleasurable experience is the people: Paolo, Henry, Alvaro, Santiago, and Jonathan. They were tremendously helpful in every way, from making our stay wonderful to helping us navigate this beautiful city. They also allowed us to use our fractured Spanish while teaching us the proper usage along the way. We apologize to the rest of the staff whose names we did not get, but who also make Los Balcones a fantastic experience. Desmion & William

    "Very welcoming property"
This is definitely a very nice 3 star property, with super, friendly, welcoming staff and in a pretty good location, but there are some issues that make it slightly tricky to give a glowing review. It is a relatively easy walk into the main heart of Cuenca, taking no more than 20-30 minutes depending on your pace and it does seem very safe. There is a lovely lounge which serves tea, coffee, fruits and cake 24/7, which is a nice way to relax and to meet fellow travellers. The breakfast is served in a nice, airy atrium dining room and there's a good choice of cooked eggs, toast/bread, cereals, yogurt, juice (made with water), fruit, ham, cheese, coffee, tea, chocolate etc., all the basic staples. The rooms are spotlessly clean and although sparse, certainly comfortable. However, there is absolutely no sound proofing of any kind as it's just bare boards separating the rooms and the downstairs, once breakfast starts gearing up, you may as well be trying to sleep in the kitchen or the dining room. You will hear EVERYTHING. The linens and bedding are clean, but you will need the blankets and down that is provided as there's no heating of any kind and Cuenca is not the warmest spot, even in summer. There's no aircon either, but you can open the windows. The bathrooms is brand new and there's good water pressure. There's soap & shampoo provided, but towels are not changed every day. The towels were actually really old and very badly stained.
