"Gorgeous older property getting an update"
The resort, about 50 years old, seems to have had little renovation, but pretty good maintenance, since it was built. Now it's undergoing a big renovation that should make its facilities more modern.
Our stay was in a not-yet-renovated room that was nevertheless comfortable, attractive and very pleasant, although with older bathroom fixtures. It had a small fridge, a coffeemaker and big balcony with two comfortable chairs, with a view of a pond surrounded by extensive lawns and with a forested hill in the background. Our friends stayed at the opposite end of this very big property in another building, and had a similar experience. There's a coffee shop for breakfast, which also has nice views, and several great breakfast and dinner restaurants within a few minutes' drive (three or four of them an easy walk) The location is good, set back from the road, but a two minute drive to downtown.
The staff was very friendly and accommodating, and the office is adjacent to a big residents' lounge with fireplace, several couches and an adjoining, separate TV room (so you can relax without hearing the TV if you prefer) There's usually an urn of complimentary coffee or hot cider, or both.
The recreation building is generally very good: decent-sized indoor pool, cardio equipment, some weights. But many lockers are broken and the game room's air hockey, table soccer (broken), pool table, etc seem all to be coin-operated, a bit chintzy and also inconvenient for those without change.
