There's not a lot to do in Sunnyvale – unless you count working on a semiconductor project or taking a meeting with internet giant Yahoo. But its location 12 miles from downtown San Jose makes it a fine base of operations for exploring everything Silicon Valley has to offer.
Of course, you can always visit one of Sunnyvale's tiny niche museums, such as the Lace Museum or Sunnyvale Heritage Park, but with a short car ride you can enjoy the broader pleasures of San Jose Museum of Art, or perhaps even more fitting, the Tech Museum of Innovation. For something totally offbeat, visit the wacky Winchester Mystery House, which is just eight miles away, and follow it with shopping, dinner and drinks in San Jose's ritzy Santana Row, right across the street.
Have some downtime? Escape the concrete in the nearby Santa Cruz Mountains, where you can hike, breath in fresh air and gawk at giant redwoods, or hit the beach and cruise the boardwalk just one hour south in Santa Cruz.
