"Friendly and helpful staff, good "base" 4 Scotland"
We made Glasgow and Hallmark Hotel as our "base" to explore the remainder of Scotland. The Hallmark hotel served that purpose very well. It is about 10 min walk from the Central Station, which serves trains to Edinburgh. It's 25 min (about 6 - 7 pounds by Taxi) from the Queen Street Station, which is the central bus station (to airport, for example) as well as train to the west coast (Oban, Ft. Williams, etc).
The strongest part of the Hallmark Hotel, besides location, is the staff. Overall, the staff are particularly helpful and friendly (Panus, Yani, and a few others whose name we didn't write down). It was no problem to leave luggage at the hotel during short stays away - and in all but one instance, the luggage actually waited in our room for us when we returned, which is a service I didn't get in other four-star hotels.
The breakfast is the same each day, but nice, warm, and I appreciate the hot tea kettle/coffee at the table. Staff there is also efficient and hospitable. Breakfasts consist of sausage, ham, black pudding, baked beans, scrambled and fried eggs, broiled tomatoes, fruit salad, berry mix, yogurts, oatmeal, cereal, toasts, and juices.
The challenge to the hotel - not anything the staff themselves can impact - is the condition of the hotel rooms. Windows by default cannot open. In at least one room we stayed at, air conditioning was completely broken - and the staff had to bring in a fan to help us. Carpet etc. can be in poor condition.
