The villas at Banyan Tree were exceptional, we stayed in a Serenity Pool Villa and it was worth the extra few bucks. The service was good, excellent compared to anywhere else, but good compared to the Rosewood Mayakoba. We have stayed at the Rosewood and Banyan Tree in Mayakoba. Both are amazing, the service a bit better at the Rosewood and the villas a bit better at the Banyan Tree. Regardless, both places are amazing! I would recommend that both resorts be on everyone's travel "bucket list".

"Stay at the Thompson on Calle 12 - Not beachfront "
We really enjoyed our days at the Thompson (We stayed 4 nights) We did spend some time at the beach front location but were really glad we didn't spend the extra money to be here all the time b/c there is a new hotel getting built right next door and its incredible loud at the beach front location. If you are down at the ocean, if the waves are crashing a lot, you might not notice too much. All the room balconies face the construction in the beach front facility so you wouldn't even use your balcony at this location except at night when the construction ends. The Calle 12 (inland) location is not ideal b/c many of the room balconies are over the street which is very loud at night and over the weekends from 9PM - 6AM or so in the morning due to clubs in the area. We were super tired by the time we would go to our room so we could sleep through - but if you're not a heavy sleeper or have children this would be tough.

The family room with balcony was perfect. Steps from the main street, close to the beach, many great restaurants within a short walk. Staff was pleasant and helpful, including great local travel advice and restaurant recommendations from the ownership who were around most of the time. My three kids and I spent five action packed days on the beach and at the surrounding attractions. Perfect for the "anti-all-inclusive" vacationers.

Extremely friendly staff that would go our of their way to assist you. Hotel was beautiful. Bed was super comfy. Loved that I could sense faint smell of bleach in the sheets that let me know they were being properly cleaned. Close to the beach. Free breakfast was good. Very easy check-in & check-out. Wifi worked fine for me. Loved the L'Occitane products as well as the beach bag and beach towels provided to borrow. Room had ceiling fans as well as AC. And lots of lighting! Cute balcony with hammock & chairs. Responded quickly to all requests (i.e. more towels, bath products, how to work the AC & lights, blown light bulb). Really loved this hotel and would definitely stay there again.

Pocket Guide: Riviera Maya Playa del Carmen Hotels
Still small enough to explore on foot, Playa del Carmen has a relaxed, yet cosmopolitan feel, with a variety of hotels, shops, and restaurants ranging from causal to upscale. European-style sunbathing is common on beaches. Playa is a popular jumping-off point for day trips to Xcaret, Xel-Ha, Tulum, and other peninsula attractions, and a passenger ferry makes frequent runs to Cozumel.
