We found the hotel to be as expected. It's in a really easy location near the main drag and a few blocks from the beach. The only real drawback is there is no comfortable place to sit outside. The grounds are really well maintained, but the lounge chairs in the vicinity of the pool are really uncomfortable and saggy. And as it rained much of our trip, there are no umbrella-ed tables to sit at. Except one. And that one the owner would not let us use one afternoon (between lunch and dinner time), because it was on the restaurant patio. Before we had a chance not to order, he gruffly informed us the table was for paying restaurant patrons only. His approach was abrasive and offensive, considering the patio was empty and the restaurant itself was largely empty. Outside of the owner, we found the rest of the staff very gracious and helpful, especially the concierge and the wait staff.

Every year we return to our friends at Mahekla, and to a fantastic relaxing stay. Mahekla thas continued to evolve into better and better resort. The rooms are very nicely appointed with plenty of space and your own private hammocks to swing yourself into a restful slumber. The resort is situated in a jungle like setting, with pathways meandering thru the resort. A new exercise center has been added, as well as a new restaurant Fuego, and pool. The beach area is only feet from some of the rooms, and the water are an amazing turquoise...
We look forward to our return to Magellan next year, and to reconnect with the gracious staff, Rogelio, Dagaberto, Jared, Angel, Fidel, Carlos, Gabriel and Boli the concierge.

Stunning location. Huge rooms. Excellent food. But what makes this resort really special is the extensive staff who are always eager to make sure that you are enjoying yourself. Every employee is smiling all the time and they always tried to greet us by name and to remember what we liked.

The room was more than we expected. Large king bed, nice patio and the extra private spa patio, a real plus.
The help and manager were exceptional.
The food was yummy and the restaurant clean and efficient.
Would definitely stay here again.

Pocket Guide: Riviera Maya Playa del Carmen Hotels
Still small enough to explore on foot, Playa del Carmen has a relaxed, yet cosmopolitan feel, with a variety of hotels, shops, and restaurants ranging from causal to upscale. European-style sunbathing is common on beaches. Playa is a popular jumping-off point for day trips to Xcaret, Xel-Ha, Tulum, and other peninsula attractions, and a passenger ferry makes frequent runs to Cozumel.
