The Cairn Hotel is easily spotted from the main road and has its own carpark directly in front of the hotel. Checking-in was trouble-free and the staff on duty had a professional and nice manner. Our room was huge with windows all down one side giving a tremendous view over Harrogate. We had everything we needed including tea-making facilities and a television. Some might think the bathroom a bit dated, but it was fine for us: extremely clean and it had a bath as well as a shower overhead. Breakfast was the only meal we took in the hotel, but it was extremely good. The organisation was excellent. A member of staff showed you to a table and then took your order for tea/coffee and toast. You then served yourself with cereal, fruit and juice. And joined a small queue to be served with whichever components of a cooked breakfast you wanted. Again, the staff on duty were excellent, attentive, quick and helpful. During our short stay, the other guests seemed to be mainly elderly people, some accompanied by younger relatives we presumed. This contributed to a calm, relaxed and well-mannered atmosphere. The only slight blip in the proceedings was that I was asked to pay for the room on arrival. I had thought, but wasn't sure, that I'd already paid Expedia. On returning home, I found that I had already paid. I emailed Expedia and Cairn. Expedia auto-replied with pointers to their website. Cairn replied and apologised and credited my debit card within 24 hours.

On arrival at the hotel the very friendly receptionist supervisor Emily informed us that we had been upgraded from the superior room to the suite. This was a massive room with sofa and huge bed. Everything about this hotel was fabulous, staff very friendly and attentive. Food in the Brasserie was of a very high standard. As we had told the receptionist it was our 30th anniversary she organised for the chef to present a "Happy Anniversary" message piped in chocolate to us at the evening meal, a lovely special touch. Hotel was very clean in all areas. Breakfast was excellent, great choice of hot and cold food, and there was always plenty available. Hotel is in a good location, 10 minute walk from town and centre and across the road from huge green park space for walking etc.

This hotel is in an excellent location for exploring Harrogate and the superior double rooms are large and well equipped. Unfortunately my room (Veuve Clicquot) was by a fire door in the corridor. Whenever anyone went by our room the draft of the fire door opening would make our door rattle and you could hear the fire door opening and closing. The makeshift draft excluder we made out of the dressing gowns did little to ensure a peaceful lie in. I found the response of the staff a little underwhelming when I pointed out my dissatisfaction at check out. The billiard table (for pool) has seen better days. Beware the Free Parking advertised by Expedia. I was charged £10 a day and have made a complaint. Plus points - great spa experience and staff, the bar is comfortable with a wide range of drinks, otherwise would give this 2/5.
