We booked for our 30th wedding anniversary and were not disappointed. Staff were attentive and spoke English fluently, it is one of those hotels that has old fashioned customs; for example they turn your bed down. Rooms were comfortable with all soft drinks complimentary from the mini bar. Breakfast had an array of different choices, and the 'famous' Reid's afternoon tea was worth booking. We also ate in the Williams Michelin Restaurant although expensive it was our anniversary dinner and despite the small plates, we left feeling content.

The Vidamar more than met expectation. We knew the location was good---i.e. walking distance into old town of Funchal -- as we have stayed in this area before. However, the Vidamar, was by far a superior hotel. We were welcomed warmly by staff, and that set the trend for the week. The food was exceptional, with so much to choose from. The main buffet restaurant, was well organised with dishes being refiled continuously, and the other optional restaurants we used were very good too. We particularly enjoyed the Portuguese restaurant, where entertainment is also provided.
There is entertainment in the bar nightly which is very popular , and the prices of drinks are reasonable. We noticed several guests wearing wrist bands , so we assume hotel offers all inclusive. Pools are well maintained, attendants on hand at all times. Huge bedrooms, more like suites, and soundproofing in bedrooms excellent. No noise from outside!!
It was a special birthday for my husband , and the hotel surprised us with a birthday cake and champagne in our room. It would be very difficult to find fault with this hotel, my only disappointment was that some guests wore shorts/ flipflops/ tshirts in the dining room,in the evening, which detracted from the 5* rating.. The hotel should insist on a dress code for evenings.

Had a great holiday. Difficult walk to and from Funchal even for the fittest guests. Shuttle bus from the hotel covers the trip free-of-charge but finishes Saturday lunchtime until Monday morning so you will need to budget for taxi's for those days and the evenings. Staff were excellent and the a la carte food was really good. Would definitely recommend to future visitors.

we had an enjoyable 5 days in this hotel then all flights were cancelled due to high winds. EasyJet did not make any arrangements for us so we returned from the airport and fortunately The Regency Cliff had rooms available so we stayed for another 3 days. The staff were very helpful in sorting a number of issues out.

Stayed for two nights for a friend's wedding, added one more due to flight cancellation (Madeira is notorious for those).
Modern, clean hotel, very friendly and professional staff, good breakfast and dinner buffet. Great gym. Did not sample the pool but it looked clean and inviting.
The hotel does cater to a more mature clientele, think panic buttons in showers and bed rooms. The bathrooms do have a "upscale hospital" feel to them.
Overall, absolutely good value for money, probably even more so with full board options. Much appreciated the staff's flexibility, allowing us to rebook rooms when our flight was cancelled at very short notice, again, seems to be a common occurrence on Madeira.

Pocket Guide: Estreito de Camara de Lobos Funchal Hotels
Funchal, capital of the Madeira Islands, curves along a harbor and rises up verdant mountain slopes. At the Mercado dos Lavradores market, vendors display basketry, produce, fresh fish, and profusions of flowers. The Madeira Wine Lodge, housed in a 17th-century monastery building, offers tastings and tours. A ride in a wicker toboggan down steep, narrow streets is a uniquely Funchal experience.
