Nice hotel. Nice welcome. Spacious grounds with plenty of options for catching the sun. Breakfast is fantastic.
The waterfront area unfortunately looks pretty grim with the concrete blocks as sea defence. A shame because it could have been done much more nicely. That said the general scenery in the area is beautiful.
The staff in the restaurant on the lower deck could have some more awareness of people waiting to be served etc and the corridors can be noisy with loud conversations from the maids and room service so not necessarily a place for a lie-in.
The indoor pool is great for relaxing and the view of the cruise ships is fab!
The hotel hosted an older crowd when I was there so nice and peaceful in the evenings. Very close to Funchal and hilly for cycling! Stunning sunsets if anyone into running along the coast.

Beautiful, comfortable hotel. Servicing room was often later in the afternoon despite tidy room card being displayed early at breakfast time. This was poor for a hotel of this standard . Key card did not always work which meant a trek to the reception desk to rectify it. Egg orders at breakfast was a bit like "Basil Fawlty " as waiters could not seem to tie in guests to their particular order. These are all things that can be addressed and improved. Apart from these minor irritations we loved the ambiance of the property and if we returned to Funchal we would choose it to stay. The pool area is wonderful to relax, plenty of sun beds but at times guests had to put out their own sun bed mattresses.

Staff excellent as were public areas, reception staff were very helpful indeed. The public areas shone and were very festive and luxurious making you feel you were indeed on holiday. The indoor pool was lovely as it was mid December we had it to ourselves. Our room was clean and comfortable even though we were overlooking the car park. As the hotel was only 5% full it might have been prudent to put us overlooking the sea to encourage a return.
We did think that the room decor needed a slight up date with paint scuffed off the walls in places and the carpet looking "used" .
Unfortunately the breakfast was not up to standard. The meat on the cold table was of cheap cuts and mostly reconstituted. We were not given a menu the first day but were asked if we wanted an omelette. It was duly ordered as ham and cheese.......the ham was mushy reconstituted and very like spam. The second day we ordered from the menu, crispy bacon, scrambled egg mushrooms and tomatoe. We got an omelette with reconstituted ham, mushrooms and cheese. The breakfast fruit had been left overnight and the pears were going brown and the small individual fruit salads contained suspect grapes and were swimming in juice. Not what should be expected from a 4 star hotel where everything else was so good.

The Vidamar more than met expectation. We knew the location was good---i.e. walking distance into old town of Funchal -- as we have stayed in this area before. However, the Vidamar, was by far a superior hotel. We were welcomed warmly by staff, and that set the trend for the week. The food was exceptional, with so much to choose from. The main buffet restaurant, was well organised with dishes being refiled continuously, and the other optional restaurants we used were very good too. We particularly enjoyed the Portuguese restaurant, where entertainment is also provided.
There is entertainment in the bar nightly which is very popular , and the prices of drinks are reasonable. We noticed several guests wearing wrist bands , so we assume hotel offers all inclusive. Pools are well maintained, attendants on hand at all times. Huge bedrooms, more like suites, and soundproofing in bedrooms excellent. No noise from outside!!
It was a special birthday for my husband , and the hotel surprised us with a birthday cake and champagne in our room. It would be very difficult to find fault with this hotel, my only disappointment was that some guests wore shorts/ flipflops/ tshirts in the dining room,in the evening, which detracted from the 5* rating.. The hotel should insist on a dress code for evenings.
