I've stayed in amazing hotels all around the world, but Xandari has moved into first place as my all-time favorite. It's like a little Eden on Earth. The room filled with original art was wonderful - the grounds were beyond gorgeous - the free breakfast was fabulous. I could have stayed there, never leaving the grounds, for at least a week. We were there two days and didn't get to experience even half of it. It is truly a healing place. The refrigerator - with the daily replenished free snacks - was an added bonus. The view was also spectacular. I loved how each room felt so private. The shower was incredible. Also the security was reassuring. Loved this place!

Asclepios is a good get away with friendly staff, a pretty location, well maintained grounds. The spa services are reasonably priced (relative to the US) and the food is ok (although the menu is somewhat limited). The included breakfast is a fruit plate, bread (some good whole grain breads), and nice teas... if you're typically hungry in the mornings, they do offer an extended menu, but expect to pay extra for breakfast.
Location wise, you should understand that this hotel isn't centrally located for most of the tourist stops... so if you want to head over to Poa (Volcano), Doka (Coffe), Downtown San Jose (Museums), etc... anticipate some expenses related to transportation (ask the front desk to call Milton - excellent taxi driver - tell em' Anthony and Silvia said hi). There really isn't much around the hotel in walking distance (this includes ATMs, Grocery stores, etc...)... so also plan accordingly.
Our room was nice and spacious, with a pretty view, a water carafe w/ mint every day... overall pretty good. It should be noted that the walls are pretty thin and sound travels (though most people are pretty quiet). Our room (Weng Ching) had one oddity... the switch for the fan/ light, also operated the light in the adjacent room... which lead to a few late night surprises... part of the adventure.

From the moment Blanca welcomed us at the front desk, until we received the 'to go' packs of juice and homemade banana bread as we left early the next morning, we thoroughly enjoyed our very brief stay. If you stay, you simply must eat dinner in their small homey restaurant. Their chef is superb! Best food we had the whole trip. We will be back!

The city of Alajuela is in Alajuela province, 20 km (13 mi) northwest of San Jose and just 3 km (2 mi) north of Juan Santamaria International Airport. Many visitors to Costa Rica stay here on their way in and out the country. Colonial architecture is still evident in the city center. The central market, covering an entire city block, is a great place to buy souvenirs.
