This area also boasts the Theatre District's Historic State and Fox theaters.

Auburn Hills - Lake Orion

Get your motor running in this northern suburban area. Visit the home of DaimlerChrysler and see beautiful vintage cars at the Walter P. Chrysler Musuem. Check out the Palace of Auburn Hills and watch the high-flying Pistons battle the NBA's best basketball teams. You're also in luck if you like the outdoors -- explore Bald Mountain Park, where you can fish, boat, jet-ski and hike.

Southfield

Stay in Michigan's high-tech hub, conveniently located at the crossroads of three major highways. Get outdoors on more than 30 miles of cycling, hiking and nature trails. For indoor action, go wild at Northland Center, one of the largest shopping centers in metro Detroit.

Troy - Madison Heights

Relax in this affluent area, where you have several golf courses to choose from -- Sylvan Glen, Royal Oak, Red Oaks and Pine Trace. If shopping's more your thing, you must check out elegant Somerset Collection. Kids of all ages will have fun splashing around Red Oaks Water Park. For a more historical adventure, visit Troy Museum for a glimpse of Michigan's Past.

Detroit Travel Tip

Don't visit in January if you want a good deal on a hotel room. Folks from around the globe flock to the Detroit area in mid- to late-January, when the city hosts the world-renowned North American International Auto Show. Room rates tend to increase during this time, as nearly one million visitors have been known to attend this event, where the auto industry's newest designs get revealed.

Motown Historical Museum
Walk down memory lane at the Motown Historical Museum. Exhibitions trace the history of the studio that gave birth to a new musical sound. See outfits worn by Diana Ross' Supremes and the vocal booth were legends including Stevie Wonder recorded hits.
