Deeply disappointing
Just back from a trip to the South of France, and a 4 night stay at the Hotel Cantermerle in Vence. I went with my husband, who was recovering from a major operation and therefore we were hoping for a relaxing break. This was anything but. Despite having 2 heated pools, one in the small Spa area, no part of the hotel is adult only, and most of the time it felt like we were trying to relax in the middle of a primary school playground!!! We knew that the restaurant was closed on Sunday and Monday, but what we hadn't appreciated is that no food or snacks of any description would be available during this time. We booked our stay on the hotel website for 4 nights with breakfast but when we checked out they tried to charge us for one lot of breakfast for 2 people. Luckily we had a printed confirmation of our booking with us and I speak fluent french, so after 10 minutes of unpleasantness, the owner was called, and they backed down. It wasn't the extra 38 euros that was really the issue, just the fact that they felt it necessary to try and extract some extras from us in such a blatant way, this has left an bad taste, so much so, that I would never return there, nor would I recommend this hotel to anyone. If you do choose to go there make sure you have all your paperwork with you, and don't forget to pack your earplugs.

JUST GREAT
After a horrible experience in the provence we were lucky to have made a reservation at this nice hotel. The service in the restaurant , the kindness on the reception, the excellent food , the renovated rooms the heated pool, the involvment of the owner, everything was great. We really enjoyed it. We will come back

A lack of communication....
We had stayed a few days midweek at the Cantemerle in June and could not fault the hotel. So following a summer of cold and rain we decided to return in August, this time without a car. The hotel is only 20 mins drive from the airport and a shuttle bus runs from the hotel to Vence every fifteen minutes so no need for carhire. The hotel has a lot going for it - location being the biggest plus. Large gardens, peaceful, two pools, one outdoor and one indoors in the Spa/Sauna building which is separate from the main hotel. The duplex rooms are large, bright and clean. Service is unobtrusive and good. But three events upset what would have been a perfect few days, and in my view thay are all down to poor communications between management and guests...First, a minor problem with the TV. The room guide shows two english speaking channels, we could not receive them. Day one I mentioned it to reception, I was told it would be fixed. Day two the same. Day three the same. Day four I was told there had been a storm five weeks earlier and parts were needed to fix the problem, but that one channel was available. It was not. Day five the same. On day three we made a reservation for dinner in the restaurant. We had eaten there quite regularly as the food is exceptional. Prior to dinner the hotel hosted a reception for a French Olympic Medal winner, and it was only when we sat down to dinner we were advised that as a result of the reception the entire dinner menu was cancelled and replaced with a seafood buffet. Neither of us ever eat seafood and it was not too late to make alternative plans. On our last day, a Sunday, we again went to book the restaurant for dinner, only to be told the restaurant was closed for dinner on Sundays and only open for snacks on Mondays. The shuttle bus to Vence does not run on Sundays. Very convenient for guests who now have to make their way uphill to the town for their evening meal. We subsequently found the fact that the restaurant was closed was mentioned in French in the room information book, but did not appear in the english version.We were left with the distinct impression that the hotel is run by the management with little or no concern for the impact their decisions might have on their guests. Why was there no note left in all the rooms advising that the english TV channels were not available and a brief explanation and apology? Why were we not advised that the dinner menu had been replaced with a seafood buffet when I originally booked the table for that day? Why, in a four star hotel, is the restaurant closed for dinner on a Sunday and only partially open on a monday. I can only assume that its for the convenience of the hotel with little thought for the guests.It is a pity we left with this impression, as the hotel itself is difficult to fault and the food - when its available - is fantastic. A little more communication from management down through the staff would have defused these issues before they had a chance to became really irritating. We would love to return as the location is so perfect - hopefully by then they will have improved their communications to the point where the four stars are fully justified. As a final note, every hotel we have ever stayed has asked us have we enjoyed our stay - usually when the final bill is presented. It says it all the the Cantermerle did not. Maybe they just did not care?

Beautiful oasis in Vence
Set only 900mf from the old village of Vence, this hotel is magic. It has a chateau feel with the rooms opening onto a sun drenched mini courtyard facing the pool. You can relax here or take the free shuttle bus or stroll slightly uphill to the old village. If you have a hire car, you can take a leisurely day trip to the neighboring villages. Whatever you choose to go, this hotel is perfect location wise. Service is excellent and friendly. You will live it here. We stayed for 7 nights and did not want to leave.

Perfect place for discovering Cote d'Azur
We spent a week at Cantemerle and enjoyed our visit very much. We had booked the room via hotels.com and the type of room we had booked did not exist... After some hazzle, the manager found a perfect solution so we have almost forgot that little detail. Breakfast is good, rooms very comfy and the garden and pool-area is calm and relaxing. We were surprised how nice a steam sauna can be after a day in the sun and warmth of June! The restaurant has very high ambitions but does not really come all the way. We'd preferred well-cooked simple food that straneg mixes of tasets and spices... But service and drinks were very good.
