Great staff but hotel lacking
My wife and I stayed for a weekend. The staff are easily the best part of this hotel. Very friendly and helpful. I cannot emphasise the quality of the staff enough. Despite the comments below the quality of the staff meant we enjoyed the stay. But I wouldn't stay at the hotel again.1. Basic maintenance is not being done. Cracking paint and tiles, one room had a broken window unfixed our whole stay, and generally tired. Outside the reception area the decor is very basic. I agree with other comments that the rooms are small and (for the money) basic.2. The breakfast menu looks good. But the traditional breakfast is sparse - and for those (many) who don't eat haggis or black pudding it amounts to 1 rasher of bacon, 1 egg and half a tomato. My wife had the black pudding and had to leave it because it was so greasy. First morning I had haddock and poached egg: I was in a hurry otherwise I'd have sent it back, the egg was hard and the fish badly overcooked. A poached egg on second morning was only marginally better. The choice of cereals is OK, but there isn't a lot more on the buffet. Can't believe they think this is worth ¿¿17.95 each for those not on b&b tariff.3. We might have had dinner in the restaurant. Checked the fixed menu with its choice of 3 starters and 3 mains. For those who don't eat offal/blood products or seafood (again, a lot of people) this left almost nothing to eat. This poor selection gave us an immediate poor image of the restaurant manager and meant we went elsewhere rather than even consider a la carte options. Given our experience of breakfast next morning we're pleased with our choice. The hotel has decent facilities and very good staff. It just needs more attention to basics to make it a good hotel.

Disappointed with room
Single room needs remodernising, windows did not lock no door on wadrobe and there was a flat roof directly outside the window, complained and in fairness was moved to a nicer room but the stainless steel single glazed windows allowedthe noise from the road outside to be heard all night. Food was very good

burglars dream
Was booked here by my work. The main reception area appears decently furnished and the food was enjoyable, however my jaw dropped when I saw the state of my single room. The main issue was that the window was a large sliding window which could not be locked. The lock had not been recently broken and it was clear that it had been in such a state for some time. It opened directly onto a flat roof, and I could have simply stepped in or out, so anyone with access to the roof, from any other room on the floor or from outside could have slid my window open while I was out and walked in. I raised this with staff, who moved me to a first floor double room at the front of the hotel, and this too had a window which could not be locked however did not open directly out onto a flat roof, so I had slightly more peace of mind. I would later walk past my original room to find it had been re-hired within hours. The single room was decorated from the seventies, my colleagues room was missing a wardrobe door and had an used tissue in the bin and so it could not have been emptied. There was a clear layer of dust around the edges of the carpet, clearly hoovered in the centre but not cleaned to the edges in some time. While the double room was naturally bigger, the single rooms were of an incredibly poor standard. I have to be fair and praise the food but would not return due to the rooms

Mushrooms
Stayed in hotel a few times through work one night at a time Main areas of the hotel are nicely furnished Rooms however are very basic and verging in bedsit qualityThe food is generally good quality and fairly good size servings.Funny moment last time when I asked for mushrooms with my poached eggs and black pudding only to be told that mushrooms were only available to vegetarians at breakfast! In the end I got my mushrooms :-) Overall I quite like this hotel Probably be back up a few times in the summer and will try out the leisure facilities
