Excellent staff but room was tired!
Stayed for two nights 10/11 May 2013. Staff were very welcoming and the hotel at first appearance is a charming old building set well back from the main road so very quiet inside. Our room (20) was quite dark without the lights on. Furniture was old and a bit rickety. But worse was a thick layer of dust on the Venetian blinds and also inside the wardrobe. The bed and bedding were spotless and very comfortable.The bathroom was poor. Much mildew on the wooden window frame, covered by a net curtain. Taps were difficult to turn on and off and hot water took an age to come through. The toilet took about 20 minutes to refill after a flush. The shower was ok but really noisy - it sounded as if someone had switched on a vacuum cleaner! The bath handles were both very loose.The lounges were very comfortable and food at breakfast and dinner was excellent, although there were a few cobwebs at ceiling level in the dining room.This could be a really nice hotel with some money spent on it and a manager or cleaning supervisor who does some checking of rooms etc.Without exception the staff were excellent and always helpful so all is not lost.

First impressions are reasonable the drive up is a little rutted bu the hotel is imposing. Staff very friendly and professional. Beer choice is limited in the bar, bar meals reasonable - did not try restraunt. Breakfast was excellent. Room was tired and as per many comments the shower took a degree in thermal flow dynamics to get the correct setting. Wifi was good and easily accessed. Bed was comfortable. Yes I will stop again

What a Surprise
Booked this hotel as it was the closest to our friends as a surprise visit. Was a bit wary reading some of the reviews, our room was spotless, bed was comfortable, bathroom was also up to standard. We even managed a drink outside in the garden which has tables with padded seats. Free wifi and we did manage to access it in our room, our friends came for dinner, very good, they had a seven year old and the paths in the grounds made it a little adventure for him. Saving the best for last, the breakfast was probably one of the best I have had in many years, we will be back when we visit our friends again.

I want to like but it just falls short
The location is great, the surroundings are fabulous, the rooms are good and the food is exceptional (especially breakfast as the lady who seems to be in charge in the restaurant in the morning has the most wonderful attitude), so what's my problem?Well, it's an old house and there is no lift and its hard work carrying the number of bags and cases I normally do. The Internet is ok in the bar but you can't access it anywhere else in the hotel not even in the restaurant which is only a few short paces away.In summary, it's ok, actually its better than ok, its good and priced pretty well too but if there was another alternative I would probably take it.

Fantastic hotel superb location
I stayed at this hotel as part of a business trip, although it doesn't have the modern look and feel of a five star hotel it definitely has character. As soon as I walked in I felt like I as at faulty towers, but the similarity stops there. The staff were very friendly and accommodating. The views from the dining room were amazing. The bedroom was very large with one of the most comfiest beds I've ever slept on. The bathrooms could do with a little bit of updating, trying to fiddle with two taps to get the right water temperature for a shower was a bit of a hit or miss. The large rooms and bar area were very relaxing and the a la cart menu was superb. I had smoked haddock fish cake, sea bass and the most amazing chocolate dessert. The drinks tab was reasonable too. I would definitely recommend this hotel.
