Dont.... "just dont" !
Last weekend we traveled up from Cornwall to Llandudno for a few days with an old vehicle to attend the Transport Festival. We had booked two rooms at the Grand but unfortunately made the mistake of paying "up front" for the rooms .... (Don't...just don't)...As we entered the place I felt like I had stepped into a time warp. The place is in a poor state of repair throughout. First of all let me tell you why I gave this hotel a "poor" rating rather than "terrible" which in my heart I feel it deserves... ..the staff were on the ball and quite pleasant with the exception of the lady on reception who was shocked that I complained about the lack of a shower in our room within the first ten minutes of our arrival.. No shower ???? ... we couldn't be moved as they were fully booked...apparently .... also, to be fair, the linen/towels in the room were very clean and fresh and changed each morning when we were at the "starting grid" for breakfast.. (more on that later).. ... OK... now the rest.. We weren't affected by the lack of car park as the vehicle we attend the show with was left overnight on the showground... but normally this would have had me turn on my heels as soon as I realised that there is >>> no car-park <<<... The room was in a very poor state of repair.... antiquated fixtures and fittings that are only fit for a "skip"... allthough, Argos could be interested in the cheapo plastic kettle for their "retro" section ... unfortunatly we only got to use it twice per day as the hotel managment see fit to supply just two teabags and two sachets of coffee per day.. for in the region of ¿¿100 per room per night i though that this was tight ?... The health and safety people would have a ball should they visit and see the fitting that is hanging off the bathroom door frame just waiting to cut open someones wrist (see photo).. and I thought that the cables that are laying on the balcony are something of a trip hazard....(photo) that is assuming that the rotten rattling balcony doors havent blown off .. (photo). I shoved the chair up against them at 3.am ... that did the trick.I was unsure about the filth that is growing in the space between the sink pedastal and the bath panel... (photo)... maybe its some sort of penicillin growth for use after the bathroom door draws blood ?Breakfast time was like a geriatrick starting grid ....queue... then serve youself setup... remanisent of a 1960's holiday camp .... I found myself looking up at the ceiling a few times when waiting for the many people in front of me to decide if it was to be beans or not...... srammbled or fried ?The hotel is in a wonderfull position commanding an elevated view and I was going to post a photo of the magnifisent view out over the bay.... but alas, the windows are so filthy that this is not at all possible ... (photo)So all in all I would say .... Dont.... "just dont" ! .... What puzzle's me is why anyone that has stayed there before would even concider staying again.... ??? Maybe if you were partially sighted the dirty windows wouldnt be a problem and if you were deaf the creaking floorboards wouldnt keep you awake.... I tried to avoid them but our freinds thought that I was either break dancing or having some sort of siezure !This hotel needs a couple of million pounds spending on it ... until then I would recomend that you Dont.... "just dont" ! ....

Location, location, location - forget it!
There is nothing grand about the Grand, in fact, everything about this hotel is not grand at all, and it¿¿¿s cheap except for the room rate (¿¿125pn). We had a ¿¿¿Premier¿¿¿ room which suggests perhaps a touch of luxury and superior accommodation. At the Grand it just means more woodchip, silicon and jumble sale furniture, oh, and an ironing board. We had a sea view just visible through the filthy windows. The ¿¿¿Premier¿¿¿ restaurant¿¿¿s dinner menu is little more comprehensive than ¿¿¿take it or leave it¿¿¿. We didn¿¿¿t try it, everything inside was filthy, the cups, glasses dishes, everything. There was bread on the floor we spotted at our first breakfast still there when we left three days later. You¿¿¿ll need your own face flannel and there is no parking beyond a public car park with comprehensive rules. I didn¿¿¿t think places like this still existed ¿¿¿ what must foreign visitors think of the Welsh? We can recommend dinner at either St George¿¿¿s or the Empire Hotel, both in walking distance.

shame
Its tragic that this Grand Old Lady had fallen into such disrepair. We have just spent three nights here. Our room was very small and reasonably clean, but sad! What saved it was a balcony with a magnificent view of the beach and sea.The dining room we found a miserable place, and the food is reminiscent of school dinners! What really put me off was from where I was sitting all I could see was the staff scrapping the remnants off plates into a large bin. We all know that this happens, but do we want to watch it in the dining room while we are eating? Why on earth dont they do this in the kitchen? We paid the extra to use the premier dining room. This was so much better. Better room with lovely views. Better food with more choice. The best thing we found was the entertainment which is excellent, almost as good as you would get on a cruise line. They have resident musicians The Grand Melody and we found them really good. There is also a show every night with a different theme, we found this entertaining, lovely singing and dancing. All the drinks we found to be reasonably priced. All in all it was a successfull holiday and good value for money.

Just avoid it
We stayed in a standard double room here for one night in April. It was cheaper than most of the other hotels in Llandudno & it is centrally located but my advice would be to pay an extra tenner and stay somewhere decent. This hotel is ancient and although it does look quite grand from the outside it's really shabby inside. We stayed in another Brittania hotel recently & although it was also an old hotel & quite basic we were perfectly happy with it. Unfortunately in the case of The Grand Hotel our experience wasnt good. The room was very small and our bathroom door (which opened right at the bed) wouldnt lock. There was also an awful smell of urine in the bathroom (both in our room and also from the bathrooms in the lobby, hardly welcoming!). As regards the decor, the room had magnolia painted 1970's chip paper on the walls, no bath, very tired furniture and a tiny little portable telly. We had booked for two adults and an infant but a cot wasnt provided & only one set of towels. Breakfast was only served for an hour between 9 & 10 so there was a queue & when we did get a seat we were at a table with another couple. The 'hot' food was lukewarm, we couldnt find any coffee & i dont know what the scrambled eggs were made from because they didnt taste of egg! Parking isnt provided by the hotel and be prepared to be harrassed by the Conwy Borough Council Parking Attendent while trying to unload your car at the door! The only positives I can think of for this hotel is that reception was efficient and the hotel looks out onto the beach in Llandudno, there also seems to be entertainment most nights (albeit for an older generation). All in all I couldnt recommend it.

Traditional Seaside Hotel
A group of friends (3 couples) stayed for a 1 night break on 21/04/13. The hotel is an impressive old building with creaking floor boards and high ceilings. Currently there are area's which require some general attention but this did not spoil our stay. The entertainment was not that good, the reception service was efficient and helpful. Breakfast was buffet service and the room was busy and noisy, items did run out but were soon replaced. The bacon and sausage were both very tasty! I would stay again as its location is very good on the seafront by the pier.
