Revisiting Heythrop
Visited this hotel as our daughter is living/working in a nearby animal establishment. I also stayed here in the 70's, 80's and 90's when it was Natwest Staff College. Room very basic but at only ¿¿65 per night for a double what would you expect. Website stated breakfast would be ¿¿19.99, but on arrival was told that there was a special in hotel offer & breakfast would be only ¿¿14.99. Stayed two nights. Bed very comfortable, but these rooms were pretty much the same as when it was the college and all rooms were singles. We only had breakfast in the hotel, which was very good other than the tea which was kept in thermal jugs and was stewed. Tea should be fresh!!!!! Bar ok but expensive. There was a Dr Who convention going on and also the hotel has a golf course so there were quite a few people around. Next door and connected by a corridor was a Crowne Plaza hotel which had its own reception, but you could charge the bills to your room in the other hotel. Their bar was much more modern and had a better selection of beers, including real ale. This bar was still expensive.

Ideal getaway
We stayed over the bank holiday weekend and it is a fabulous getaway. It's very impressive when you arrive and your not let down with the quality of the rooms. We stayed as part of a voucher deal and it was excellent value for money. The afternoon tea itself was worth the money. I would highly recommend this hotel for a quiet getaway break.

A thoroughly enjoyable break
We booked this at the last minute just to get away for a short break.The long drive could do with some maintenance work as there were many potholes but on reaching the end of the drive we were greeted by a building that looked every bit as good as the photos, Parking was a little confusing as it was not clear what was hotel parking and what was the Golf Club, We parked in an area just outside the main gate to the building.Check-in was quick and efficient and carried out with a smile and a couple of useful leaflets given out. It's worth asking for the leaflet they have outlining the history of the house too.We were given a room in the Shrewsbury wing and although it was slightly on the small side it was clean, comfortable and had everything we needed.We used one of the leaflets given to go for a short walk around the grounds. We were fortunate that it was dry and sunny and the grounds looked beautiful. We wend a little astray from the walk that was marked but found the beautiful walled garden and other delights. The short walk turned into an hour of exploration which was great. We finished at the spa and pool centre where we stopped for a coffee watching the sun slowly sinking.That evening we ate in the Brassey bar which is shared with the Crowne Plaza and ate a really enjoyable meal off the bar menu. Both of us had the Heythrop Club sandwich and a drink and it cost just over ¿¿22. The food was fresh cooked, served piping hot and with an apology for the slow service (we waited just over 30 mins after ordering). We sat and had another coffee in the main entrance hall to the old house and used the free wi-fi there which we found quite fast compared to other hotels we've stayed in.The following morning we used the pool before having breakfast - the pool area and changing rooms were again spotless. The breakfast fayre was standard large hotel buffet and it was great to see the food being topped up frequently.The hotel was very busy as there was a Doctor Who convention on which we hadn't known when we booked but whilst some of the service was a little slow the staff were always pleasant and helpful.Checkout was just as smooth as checkin.Overall a lovely place to stay especially in the sun.

Pleasantly surprised, nice hotel,great value&beautiful surroundings
After reading the reviews on tripadvisor, I didn't know what to expect of this hotel! My first impressions were great- The whole complex is beautiful with a lovely long driveway and gorgeous surroundings. The old house looks lovely too. We stayed in rooms in the main house which are refurbished. I was very happy with it. They're standard rooms& I felt they were well worth the ¿¿60 per room we paid. Very clean & fit for purpose. Breakfast was good and the staff were very friendly. But best if all is surroundings. There are lovely walks around the hotel or you can rent bikes. The golf course looks great too. I didn't get to use the pool but it looks very nice too. Overall I would definitely stay here again and I definitely recommend it! Don't be put off by some bad reviews, I'm glad I wasn't it! The location is good too- close to both Oxford and the Cotswolds nice little villages.

Never ever ever again
Imagine the nastiest room in the worst Etap in the world--- and then lower your expectations. I stayed in a poky small room with horrid cheap furniture and a view overlooking parked cars and the outdoor smokers. Lowlights were numerous, but here are a couple of particularly exquisite details for you:The hot water safety button in the shower was broken, so the tap kept slipping and absolutely scalding me.The cable on the TV was so short that I couldn't angle the TV to actually watch it in bed. If I sat on the side of my bed, I had a partial view of the TV.There was a sci-fi convention on, and the hotel was overrun with men of a certain age and appearanceThe hotel reception seemed to be staffed by clueless children. Sweet but didn't know what they were doing.Now, on the plus side, the grounds are nice to walk in, and the gym was ok. The pool was more of the 'dive-bombing children' variety, than one to get any exercise in. The 'spa' and 'club house' look more like a cement shelter than anything luxurious. The food was average at best. Had some dried out fish on a mountain of mash potato, and a very average lemon tart, which I wouldn't be surprised had been purchased from Tesco.
