Unbelievable!
My last valentines holiday was spent in this hotel and I couldnt find anything to complain about (excpet for the cold :P). Food is great for a British country, views and surrounding alone are worth the whole trip and the staff is really nice. Rooms clean and well equipped. A must visit I assure you. Not to mention that Scotland is an lovely coutry.

Almost perfect but not quite
We paid ¿¿240 for one night in a double room with a 5 course dinner and breakfast included. On arrival, the building looked very impressive, but the staff left us waiting to check in for some time. We were shown to our room by an eccentric but knowledgeable porter. The room was quite small but light and clean with views of the gardens. It came with tea, coffee, shortbread and fluffy bathrobes. We had a huge afternoon tea in the Orangery before heading to the spa. We had the spa to ourselves and enjoyed the sauna/steam room and the plunge pool with its various exciting buttons for different effects. Dinner was in the Dungeon Restaurant which was an amazing setting - suits of armour and medieval weapons on the walls. The food combined elements of gastronomy with traditional cooking to produce unique and challenging dishes. After dinner we waited a long time to sign for our food but there were no waiting staff around and nobody at reception either. Points to note: little finishing touches such as scrappy paper signs, and lack of staff, let this hotel down. If these matters were improved the hotel would score a perfect 5.

Gorgeous but tired
Fantastic setting, and our room was huge and spacious at the top of the castle, with fantastic countryside views. BUT, the hotel is very tired and need of maintenance. The bathtub was severely flaking paint, the wallpaper was sagging, and it wasn't so much shabby chic as shabby. Reception staff were not particularly helpful, and the concierge clearly was not impressed by having to help us lug our bags to the top of the castle (no lift). The restaurant in the dungeon was nice and worth a meal. The spa was once lovely, but again in need of maintenance. The highlight was the falconry visit, where we flew a hawk and owl.

Great Stay!
What a great stay my husband and I had in the Alexander room at Dalhousie Castle! The room was very large with beautiful period furniture and a great view of the grounds from the window. We had a delicious gourmet dinner in the Dungeon and breakfast in the Orangerie. Friendly and helpful staff. Wish we could have stayed more than one night but rooms weren't available. Book early. Well worth the money for a wonderful castle stay.

Mixed reviews on TA; exceeded our expectations. Loved it.
We stayed at Dalhousie Castle as part of a special girls trip to the UK. Stay included my sister, my 18-year-old daughter, and of course myself. My daughter went to stay at a haunted castle. We stayed in room 22, the William Wallace room. Our package included a spa treatment, dinner at the Dungeon restaurant and breakfast at the orangery. I have to add a comment about a wonderful woman at reception named Emma. Emma and I emailed back and forth several times over the months before our visit and she was delightful and responsive to work with. She also helped me place a local call during our stay at the castle. The room wallpaper had a bit of wear and tear but the ambience and more importantly the views from the terrace made it worth it. That is a good thing because the William Wallace room is the highest one in the castle involving about four flights of stairs. There was a brilliant and kind porter named Alistair who helped us with our bags. The night Porter wasn't there to give us the two were that many have referenced. Alistair did take us around a bit and show us a couple of things including hidden passages. His service and his spirit were simply awesome. We loved him.The spa treatments were heavenly. I used the spa facilities to shower and the water pressure was the best I think I ever had! There were a couple more folks in the spa but it did not appear to be overly busy.Where do I start to tell you about dinner. We met in the library as others have described. The person taking drink orders was the one person we met who wasn't overly service minded but he certainly seemed to be efficient. Our dinner included three courses. However the chef also provides two other courses in the form of a pre-starter and a pre-dessert. The food was absolutely yummy. We cleaned our plates. If there was one negative it might be that it was so quiet we felt a little overly formal and talked in whispers. Then again we are sort of a moist group of three. I slept on the sofa bed and found it quite comfortable. We don't seem to have encountered any ghosts, but we are still looking at our pictures!Breakfast in the orangery was very satisfying and relaxing. The room is lovely. After some encouragement from our waitresses I tried haggis All I can say is I can now say I tried haggis. It is more of a mind thing than taste. My daughter was signed up for Falconry experience. If you even halfway enjoy birds you will love the experience. She was able to fly a hawk and and two owls. Perhaps we were lucky because she was the only client at the time. Falconry is a family run business with a very knowlegable family and I encourage you to experience it if it all interested. When are one night stay was sadly over, Alister called the cab service they used. The cost back to Edinburgh was only 18 pounds whereas the flagged cab used from waverly to go to the castle was around 25 pounds. And I must say the driver was both informative and educational. Excellent service. So we found dalhousie castle to be a rich and wonderful experience. Expensive maybe but in our view worth it.
