Lovely weekend
Stayed over the bank holiday , staff very friendly and helpfull , loved the 24 hour bar . Our room was a little shabby but did not really bother us , the room was extremely hot and we did have to open the window , so it was a little noisy . Thought the breakfast was a little over priced , bit the 3 course meal on Sunday eve was absolutely delicious and was very good value . We would stay here again

Proud history but has it got a future?
Last minute room booking Bank Holiday weekend and 6 other hotels I tried fully booked. That should have been my warning plus it was cheap. Room 238, single room, was good size and shower and bed adequate then it goes downhill. Carpet threadbare, TV not working and no instructions, no coathangers whatsoever in wardrobe (that's a first for me!), fan in bathroom sounded like a cement mixer and only worked when it wanted to, sign asking to 'use drawstring on curtain' - no drawstring, Generally a very shabby hotel, needing a full refurb that will cost a fortune and take many years. Must be surviving on event nights and wedding parties, not on repeat custom.

Shabby but not chic!
The hotel was well placed in the centre of town but also with a dual carriageway running under the window so you couldn't let any air in because of the noise from the traffic and the trains pulling in and out of the station. The room was in desperate need of a refurbishment, the walls and paintwork were scraped and there were holes in the wall, the decoration looked as if it had been there since the 70's. There had been an attempt to modernise the bathroom but this didn't quite work due to the cracks in the ceiling and general mess of the paintwork. I remember this hotel from along time ago and it's a shame that it has been allowed to become so tatty.

Who needs a sauna
We were in room 242 for 2 nights and never have we known a room so hot. In the bathroom, even the our toothpaste was unpleasantly warm in the tube. How is anyone supposed to sleep in that heat. When we mentioned it at reception, the only response was that they cannot do anything as it is caused by the hot water pipes under the floor. We accept that the ongoing "tired" nature of the rooms will benefit from the refurbishment, but if the hotel is continuing to do business something must be done about the temperature in the rooms.

in need of a refurb
having read other reviews it seems the hotel is undertaking a refurb of the hotel so if you are thinking about booking this hotel then give them a call and ask if they have any rooms that have been refurbished.The location and free parking are the positives and the reason we booked the hotel - I wasn't expecting anything special for ¿¿55, the room was clean, the staff were friendly but the room was very shabby and unbearably hot even though it wasn't that warm outside! If you are a light sleeper don't even consider booking this - the A61 is virtually outside the hotel and traffic noise was loud - we had to have the windows open as the room was so hot so I can't see any way around this unless they install aircon. The room was very poorly decorated, wallpaper peeling off, holes in the doors, very worn carpet, old uncomfortable bed, tv falling apart and only able to view BBC1.......If you have the cash and are wanting a nice getaway book somewhere else, if you just need a cheap base close to town to lay your head - give it a try
