Budget hotel with a nice vibe
Keep in mind that this is a budget hotel and hostel, and that's what you should expect it to be. It comprises some floors of another older hotel which they have renovated and added some new amenities to. The area of the city can be a little rough, particularly after dark and it is recommended that you not wander around too much by yourself. If you can manage that, you will have a clean room for an affordable price which is in close walking distance to Pershing Square which is a major transport hub.

Nice & comfortable for budget minded
Cannot add anything more to what was already said. I would advise all reading to take it all with a grain of salt and do your research outside of this site as well. Downtown LA is downtown LA. That's all I'm gonna say about that (do your research or ask a friend). This was my first time staying downtown and I was with my girlfriend. Both of us were uninitiated but felt comfortable after a couple hours being in the area. We both highly enjoyed our stay because it was different and adventurous (it's "hostel" living). The Stay on Main is at its very least a comfortable, adequate place to stay for the night. At its best, it's hip, savvy travel accommodations for the modern traveler. The reviews that discount this place are really doing a disservice to all travelers. My girlfriend and I would not hesitate to stay here again in the future.

Great place! Clean, and affordable, perfect location
Great rooms, shared bathrooms, but their floor of the Cecil hotel is pristine! Great decor, very hip and comfortable. I bed room small, but a wet bar and a flat screen really make the room feel cozy. Make sure not to travel east on seventh or eighth street, but everything west of main is great at night.

Cheap and Funky!
I really don't understand some people on here. What more do you want for $50-$60 a night? If you want the amenities and the room size of of the Ritz or Beverly Hotel then spend $300 a night. This hotel has everything we needed cozy room, continental breakfast in the mornings, conveniently located in the heart of downtown near Museums, shopping centers, and Metro which you can be in Holywwod in 15 min or Pasadena in 10min. Bars and Nightclubs around the corner. The staff was extremely professional and very helpful. We spend 4 days in a room with its own bathroom which we didn't experience the showers and toilets down the hall; they looked clean and well attended to us. Overall, we really enjoyed our stay and will recommend this hotel to everyone we know that would rather spend their money on shopping and experiencing LA then in a hotel room.
