Fantastic Staff
The hotel is a bit dated and the beds are actually really bad. The pillows are so lacking in volume that you have to fold them 5 times. The internet was dodgyEnough of the bad stuff, the staff are absolutely fantastic. The care and attention was great. From being shown to your room to the bar to the restaurant. All were helpful in and old fashioned way.Its in a great location too with all the shops around that any good shopper could want. Not me though apart from the BMW store round the corner!Great value and great staff. I would ask for a decent pillow and a decent bed though if you could.

endless waiting for the elevator and ridiculous internet prices
Spend a weekend there on a city trip. The lobby and general facilities look nice. Rooms are ok with spacy cupboards. A bit outdated and can do with some upgrading by now (TV f.i.). It could be a very nice place to stay but there are definitely some things that make other places maybe a better choice. Number one: the elevators. There are only two in the main lobby. When I was there one of them was broken almost during my whole stay, so at certain times you could wait ten minutes before it showed up, and then finding it full. I don't understand why they couldnt have that fixed within two or three hours; this is supposed to be a five star hotel. The other thing is the internet. We had to pay almost 20 euros per day and not per room but just for one iPad. For your phone you had to pay the same amount. I think this is theft. When will the hotel business start to understand that wifi and internet is like water or electricity. It has to be there and we don't want to pay extra for it. I don't think I will go here again. There are places that offer more and better quality for less money.

Beware of the add-ons
Nice hotel in a good location with the amenities of the old dowager that it is. But at $29/d for internet (don't believe the "free" 15 minutes, it is slower than dial-up), $25/d parking and $25/pers. for a continental breakfast, this is not worth the plush lobby and doormen. Rooms are OK, but not exceptional considering the price.

Generally excellent.
I was slightly disappointed with my room when I arrived, it is on the small side and quite dates. There was also no tea and coffee or ironing board which was a little inconvenient. The reason why this did not detract from my stay is based on a few things. Most notably the service, it's absolutely impeccable and the staff are a real credit to the hotel. The 60s design which permeates the hotel is something very different and in a way, it adds to the charm of the hotel. It has a classic feel of grandness and class. The Internet had to be paid for but there is an option to opt for a slower option for free, which is great if you just need to check facebook or your emails. The pool area is very nice indeed, it is heated to a comfortable temperature and had a lot of space to sit with 18 sun loungers and a few tables and chairs, towels, robes and slippers are provided. There is also a small gym and a sauna which is mixed and naked (perhaps a surprise to British guests!) the location is excellent with good transport links. Finally, on the food side, as you would expect, the breakfast is very expensive at 25 euros but I can honestly say it is the best breakfast I have ever had in any hotel, I was very impressed. I also chose to eat at the grill in the evening which came with a slightly hefty 75 euro price tag but again I was very impressed by the quality and presentation, the staff always want to go the extra mile. So if you can afford it, I would thoroughly recommend taking this impressive, if a little pricey option. And I should mention that the beds have Tempur mattresses which are, needless to say, incredibly comfortable! There is also a pillow menu with lots of options available. If you forget a razor like I did or something else similar, it will be brought straight to you.

Almost like 2 different hotels (depending on which room type you have) - Here's the breakdown!
First off, as the title of my review states, the Kempinski Bristol Berlin is really like 2 different hotels (based on what room type you have) in one. Basically the hotel has the older section (aka it's 'classic' and 'superior' rooms), and then it's newly renovated/refurbished section (aka it's 'deluxe' rooms/suites). The older section, as others have stated in previous reviews, is quite severely dated (ie. old retro furnishings, tube TV - basically stuck in the 70s/80s, perhaps the 5* standard BACK THEN but not today). Whereas the newer section is really updated/modern (LCD TV, 2 bathrooms, modern furnishing, etc. - meets the 5* standard today). Therefore, the ratings seem to vary widely, but based primarily whether you are staying in a classic/superior room (more like 3* standard) or a deluxe room (more like 5* standard).** That being said and cleared up, my following review is based on a DELUXE (new) room stay of 3 nights in May 2013. I originally booked a classic room, but decided to pay for the upgrade (60 euros per night) based on the reviews from others on TA. **---The newly renovated/redesigned (deluxe) rooms are absolutely fantastic. Though priced accordingly for a 5* room (think 200 EUR+ per night stay, unless they have a promo), they have all the features and amenities of home. The room is very generously sized, with a nice king bed (2 doubles together) and a nice sitting section with leather couch/seat. The room also had TWO bathrooms; one smaller one (with toilet and sink only), and the other main larger one (large walk in shower, large tub, toilet, sink) - this is great if you have 2+ people staying in the room, very nice touch. The bed itself was very comfy, didn't have any problems sleeping and the room/walls seem very nicely soundproofed as well.Bathrobes, slippers, toiletries were all provided daily. English paper (international NY times) also arrived every morning (free). There is a large closet in room as well for storage, as well as a safe (free to use). Only thing 'missing' would probably be tea/coffee making, however, I don't use this so it wasn't a negative for me. Wifi is not free, arguably pricey (19 euros per 24h).The service (from front desk to housekeeping) was impeccable. Very kind and friendly service I had by all. I arrived early, and was able to check in around noon (I had e-mailed before arrival to make note of this request). Staff was very helpful and accommodating in this regard, so I have no complaints there.---Overall I had a very nice stay in their deluxe rooms (paid accordingly). However, if I would have stayed in my original classic room, I believe I would have been underwhelmed as well (ie. classic rooms not to the standard of a 5* hotel in 2013). So that being said, I would recommend you stay here if you can get/afford the DELUXE rooms/suites. Otherwise, there are better options out there in Berlin for the same/equivalent price of their (older) classic/superior rooms. Thanks for reading!Alot to take in, but hopefully this helps with your travel planning/decisions.*Please quickly hit the 'YES' this review was helpful button, if this helps in your travels. Happy travels. =)
