Some rough spots - room to improve
Rating this hotel is a bit difficult as there were some severe disappointments/problems, but the management did make special efforts to address the concerns - although really, they should not have happened to be concerns in the first place!I went into it expecting that it might be less than a stellar stay based upon a lot of other traveler/Tripadvisor reviews, but hoped that it would be better now that they've joined the Accor family as an MGallery hotel. I was basically wrong.First, in my book, this is DEFINITELY NOT a 5* hotel. 4* is more like it.Arrived here on the 2nd day in Rome for a 4-night stay, having used points to stay at the Rome Intercontinental on the first night to have better chance of an early checkin since arriving after 24hrs of travel from Hawaii to Rome. I had contacted LaGriffe well in advance to ask about early checkin, and they basically told me it wouldn't happen/ that the only way would be to book the entire night before to get a 10am checkin - but that they would give me a special rate. Then, when I asked what the rate would be, they quoted me a price higher than I booked for using Hotels.com!Despite being offered a late 2pm checkout after our early checkin at Intercontinental, we checked out well before noon and left our luggage while doing sightseeing. Then, around 3pm returned to take taxi from Intercontinental to LaGriffe. Arriving at LaGriffe, we were told they had a problem with the room, and didn't want to give us a "bad room", so instead they would put us up for one night at a Best Western not too far away, and then when we moved back the next day, give us upgraded junior suite. This REALLY upset me as I wanted to settle in and not worry about moving having already done a one-night stay. I fumed a bit and said I would think about it, discussed it with partner, and returned to say, OK, give us the "bad" room for one night and change us the next day - did NOT want to be switching hotels. It was then we were told it wasn't a problem with room being bad - they were overbooked and had no room. Eventually, it was worked out that they would bump other guests (was told they were overbooked by FIVE rooms!), and after waiting some time were given a "better" room (although not the suite). The next problem: Internet. The wireless internet signal didn't reach to our room. Any 5* hotel I've stayed at would quickly correct this kind of problem - often by putting a router directly in the room (the room had ethernet port). Not here. So, could only use my laptop (with the ethernet cable that I travel with) in the room - no smartphones, etc. And, that's only when it worked as the entire hotel's guest connectivity went out on more than one occasion - and the staff was ill-equipped to deal with that. They wanted to send bellboy to room to check my computer when the problem wasn't in my room or with my computer! Finally, they would reset their equipment. Again, just not what I would expect in 5* establishment. If they're going to send someone to room to check out Internet, they should at least have their own equipment to check it with and not rely on mine. If they can show me their equipment works when mine doesn't, fine - I'll fix mine. Finally, on the last day of the stay, they obviously did something to the wireless setup as a wireless signal became usable in the room. (I also use the Android Wifi Analyzer app which lets me see all the wireless routers and signal strengths.) Earlier on, the solution offered was to change rooms - the room they would change to did have strong wireless signal, but the room itself wasn't as nice, and since I could use wired ethernet, I chose not to move. Some of the staff here were not so great, but others in management really tried - so for that this hotel gets a better rating than I would otherwise give. The room (not the most basic here) and bathroom were nice. We had buffet lunch one day in the rooftop restaurant and it was very nice and good value. There was only one working elev

Five star must be three star
Lousy service, no internet, cold shower, hard bed and thin walls so you hear the other guests. It hotel was far overrated (5stars) and the quality was not conform the price. It was a big dissapointment and we checked out after two days to go somewhere else. There are better options like the opera hotel around the corner for instance (via firenze) for less money and offers more service.

Stay somewhere else...
My best friend and I stayed at this hotel during our vacation to Rome the first week of May. When we first arrived to the hotel we were told there was a medical emergency with one of the larger families that was staying there so they were unfortunately fully booked. They put us in the hotel next door for the night, free of charge, which we thought "okay, no problem". They also told us they were going to upgrade our room and for us to come as early as possible in the morning because our room would be ready and we could have breakfast there. We also booked a tour of The Colleseum through La Griffe as well for 2 pm for the next day (btw - NOT worth the money, I think it was Green Light Tours or something like that). The hotel they put us in was terrifying. It was supposedly a 4 star hotel but reminded me of the movie The Shining. Our view was of a courtyard that looked like a prison and our floors shook every 20 minutes, i'm assuming because of the elevator but I could be wrong. We decided to sleep in to make it to check out at 11 since we were exhausted and that way our room would definitely be ready at La Griffe. However at 10 am the maids were rushing us out. Now, I know this is not La Griffe (which is why I am not disclosing the hotel's name), but they are the reason why we had to stay there for a night, as a 5 star hotel who I would assume would like a good reputation, I would have hoped the hotel they put us in would have been significantly better. Not to mention WE had to pay for the 6 euro tax at the hotel. Now, when we went back to La Griffe, which was after 11, our room was not ready, as they had told us it would be. We had not showered, or had breakfast, and we were extremely stressed out and had to make it to a tour at 2 pm. I expressed my frustration with the lady who was helping us out and she was able to expedite the cleaning process and sent us upstairs for free food, even though the kitchen was closed they were able to provide us with pastries (which my friend was allergic to) and coffee. After eating and going back downstairs our room was still not ready so they were able to change the date of our tour free of charge so we could relax a little bit. Overall, the room was amazing. I don't know what our original room was, but we were upgraded to a Junior Suite. The hotel manager gave us an apology letter with a bottle of champage which I thought was very sweet. The breakfast staff on the other hand is what brings my original score of 4 down to a 2. HORRIBLE. My friend and I on our first real breakfast were seated and after waiting maybe 15 minutes for one of the wait staff to come by and ask us what kind of coffee we wanted I decided to get up and ask for it on my own. I found a waitress who was just standing around and politely asked "Could I have 2 cappuccinos for table 24, please?" And she had the audacity to ROLL HER EYES AT ME, like I was some sort of inconvience. And told me that next time I should wait for a waiter that's walking by to get my coffee. I told her that I would have except there was NO ONE asking for coffee. The next day we got to breakfast later and the same waitress (taller, short pixie cut, unfortunately did not get her name) was just staring at my friend and I. And guess what...we were never asked what kind of coffee we wanted. Then the manager went around to every table but ours because they were going to put the buffet up and wanted to make sure the guests were satisfied. The staff downstairs, was amazing and very helpful. Valentina I believe was one of the front desk ladies who helped us out. And our room was great. Unfortunately this hotel has a lot of potential if it wasn't for the restaurant staff bringing it down. I'd say, stay somewhere else. Unless you like rude and arrogant waiters and waitresses.

Luxury Hotel? You have got to be kidding
We had been looking forward to staying at this hotel firstly because I like Accor MGallery Hotels and secondly, because it claimed to be newly opened. It is a design hotel and quite frankly, I didn't get the design...very dark hallways with a Red and cream Modern-style decor in the rooms. The location is excellent, but there are many hotels in the area to choose from.It was obvious that things were not right when there was only one small elevator in operation (for a hotel with more than 200 rooms), and the concierge desk was perpetually empty. We were on the 6th floor, so many times, we just walked down the flight of stairs to exit the hotel. We talked to other disgruntled clients about the elevator situation and one told us that she always goes up before going down because the elevator was filled by the time it got to her floor. The elevator rug looked like it had not been cleaned for years; it was disgusting. When we checked into our room, we noticed that the walls were quite scuffed up and that the hair dryer was practically falling off the wall. It appeared to have been in use for many months. We called to have it fixed, but that did not happen until the next day when we told the manager himself. He seemed exasperated that it had not been done and had it fixed pronto. The room (and hotel for that matter) was simply not clean. They provided slippers for guests and we used them because we noticed how dirty the floors were. There was also mold growing where the shower leaked. We ate at the breakfast buffet one day and found it adequate, but not worth 13¿¿¿ each. We also had dinner in the rooftop restaurant and here again the food was good, but not great. We noticed that in the rooftop lounge, which had lovely views of the city, was still under construction and there were tools left laying around the hallways. The nearby bathroom was also unfinished. The lounge chairs had dirty cushions, some with the stuffing coming out. We kept wondering if they were from a previous version of the hotel as this hotel supposedly just opened in mid-April.Both of the doormen were very helpful and genuinely friendly, especially Josef. The staff was, to a person, friendly and helpful.Unfortunately, we paid in advance for a better rate and couldn't just leave. And, even worse, we had pre-paid reservations there again after our sojourn to the south of Rome. Our second room was smaller than the first, but better laid out. It was still not that clean but was on the third floor so easier to get to and from the room. While on our trip to the south of Italy, the hotel graciously held on to one of our bags so we didn't have to lug it with us. We appreciated that convenience.I am not a hyper-critical person as you will see if you read my other reviews, but this was really a disappointing experience for a hotel that bills itself as luxury. I travel to Europe often for our travel website EuropeUpClose.com and have stayed in many hotels. I would call this a mediocre 4-star hotel. Having a doorman does not make for a Luxury Hotel..but cleanliness and attention to detail does, and at the La Griffe, that is sadly lacking.
